The Athens boys varsity basketball team is currently on a six-game winning streak, which includes an impressive win against previously unbeaten Marshfi eld Columbus on Saturday.

Athens has won six consecutive games since its season-opening home defeat to Wausau Newman. Athens downed Marshfield Columbus, 63-51, on the road to knock the Dons out of this week’s Division No. 5 coaches poll.

Four Bluejays achieved double-digit points against the Dons. Senior Dayne Diethelm led Athens with 15 point while junior Cooper Diedrich added 14 points, junior Kody Lepak 13 and sophomore Aiden Janke 12. Senior Cobie Ellenbecker just missed scoring in double figures with nine points.

Diethelm paced Athens with 11 rebounds and Diedrich added eight. Diethelm and Ellenbecker tied for the team lead in assists with five apiece, while Diedrich contributed four assists and he paced the team with three steals.

Diedrich obtained a double double with 10 points and a team-high 11 rebounds in Athens’ easy 54-31 road win against Rib Lake on Tuesday.

Lepak and Janke paced the Bluejays with 12 points each, while Diethelm added nine and Ellenbecker seven.

Diethelm and Diedrich led the Bluejays with four steals apiece, and Diedrich paced the team withk four assists.

Athens downed Wisconsin Valley Lutheran, 70-56, on Thursday at home.

Diedrich led the Bluejays with 20 points. Janke contributed 17 points, Ellenbecker 14 and Diethelm 11.

Janke paced the Bluejays with eight rebounds and Diedrich added seven. Ellenbecker led the squad with five assists and Diethelm had four.

‘Jay girls edged by Hornets

The Athens varsity girls basketball team lost a close game, 88-86, to Colby on Monday at home.

Junior Elizabeth Van Rixel led Athens with 26 points. Freshmen Addison Lavicka and Jazelle Hartwig added 16 points each and freshman Sophia Coker had 10. Hartwig paced the Bluejays with nine rebounds and Lavicka with six steals.

Athens beat Rib Lake, 53-34, on Friday as junior Mckennzie Schug poured in 17 points and 11 rebounds. The Bluejays have a 4-4 record this season.
