Cards bounced the ‘Cats from the 2020 playoffs

Edgar’s varsity girls basketball squad avenged a sectional semifinal playoff loss to Wausau Newman last season by easily beating the Cardinals, 68-44, Thursday in Wausau.

The Wildcats’ fullcourt press harassed the Cardinals into turning the ball over on Thursday, and Edgar’s great job rotating the ball with quick passes on offense helped its playersgetopen shots. Senior guard Makenna Guden said it was a great team win against Wausau Newman, even if the Cardinals don’t have as many talented players as they did last season.

“ Wa u s a u Newman always has a great team and a great program, therefore any time we can beat them it’s a good win for us,” said Makenna, who is the daughter of Shawn and Cari Guden.

Sophomore Reagan Borchardt led the Wildcats with 18 points and Guden added 11. Freshman Makayla Wirkus paced Edgar with 11 rebounds and Borchardt had eight.

Wausau Newman’s defensive strategy was to double team Guden every time she received the basketball, to essentially make it difficult for Guden to get a good look at the basket. Guden is Edgar’s most experienced player back this season, after last year she became the first Edgar High School junior girl’s basketball player to already score 1,000 career points.

Edgar girl’s basketball head coach Tom McCarty believes Guden just needs to be patient and she’ll eventually get her shots against opponents.

“It’s going to be a learning curve for Makenna this season to figure out how each team is going to try and defend her; each team is doing it differently,” Mc-Carty said.

Edgar downed Rosholt, 50-38, in Monday’s home game but then lost, 68-44, to Mosinee in Tuesday’s road contest. The Wildcats now have a 4-4 record this season.
