Tigers tame Wildcats
Stratford varsity head volleyball coach Brooke Kafka, the mentor, garnered the upper hand over her former assistant coach, Evan Krebsbach, on Saturday.
Krebsbach served as a Stratford varsity assistant volleyball coach underneath Kafka for a few seasons, before he took the same position at Wausau Newman last season. Now he’s the Edgar varsity head volleyball coach.
It was Kafka’s Stratford squad that beat Edgar, 3-0, on Saturday in Edgar. The Tigers won the match against the Wildcats with set scores of 25-19, 25-17 and 25-22.
“It’s great to see friendly and familiar faces in the volleyball community,” Kafka said about her experience coaching against Krebsbach. “Evan is a knowledgeable coach and it’s great to see him taking on a head coach role. I’m sure he will do great things for the Edgar volleyball program this year and in the future.”
Senior Abby Oertel led the Tigers with four ace serves and junior Ally Zuleger added two against the Wildcats. Seniors Lauryn Nagel paced Stratford with 10 attack kills and Emily Hughes with two solo blocks.
Stratford rebounded to beat Edgar in straight sets after barely defeating Wausau Newman, 3-2, on Thursday at home. Senior Breanna Ackley led the Tigers with 11 kills and four total blocks. Junior Megan Wiese added three total blocks.
Ackley’s senior teammate, Tanaya Schillinger, had glowing words of praise for her after the match win against Wausau Newman.
“She is crazy athletic and she shows her basketball abilities up at the volleyball net all the time, so it’s great,” Schillinger said about Ackley.
Stratford won five straight matches prior to Monday night’s loss at Mosinee. Schillinger led Stratford with seven kills and Ackley with six total blocks.
Edgar lost a nail biter, 3-2, to a good Prentice team on Thursday at home. Sophomore Reagan Borchardt paced the Wildcats with 11 kills and 11 blocks, and she added 17 digs and two aces.
The Wildcats honored their three senior players consisting of Mckenna Guden, Jasmine Schnelle and Olivia Urmanski against the Buccaneers.
