North-leading Loggers, Edgar Wildcats keep the ladies winless
RIB LAKE GIRLS BASKETBALL
The Phillips Loggers have emerged early as a title contender in the Marawood North girls basketball race and Rib Lake wasn’t able to do much to slow them down Tuesday night.
Behind 24 points from All-Marawood performer Jada Eggebrecht, 14 of which came in the first half, the visiting Loggers buzzsawed out to a 42-14 halftime lead and rolled to a 68-28 win. The Loggers are off to a 4-0 start in league play and hold an early game-and-a-half lead over Prentice in the North standings.
“Phillips plays at a very fast pace,” Rib Lake head coach Mike Wudi said. “We did not do a great job getting back on defense and that gave them too many easy transition baskets.”
Easy baskets were rare for the Redmen, who made 12 of 46 shots overall from the field (26%).
Lauren Pelnis sank both of Rib Lake’s 3-point makes for the night –– one in each half –– and finished with a seasonhigh eight points while also nabbing two rebounds and two steals. Savana Radtke scored seven points and had five rebounds. Reagan Reinhardt and Tia Bube scored four points apiece. That’s a season high for Bube, a first-year sophomore in the program.
Mackenzie Weinzatl had three points, four rebounds and a steal. Nellie Hopkins added a hoop, two rebounds and three steals. Jolee Gehrke pulled down a teamhigh six rebounds for Rib Lake.
Turnovers, unfortunately, helped fuel Phillips’ fast pace of play. The Redmen coughed the ball up 36 times.
Rachel Callow added 11 points for Phillips.
The Lady Redmen, now 0-5 in the Marawood and 0-6 overall, host Athens Friday at 7:15 p.m. before traveling to Owen-Withee for non-conference play on Tuesday.
Edgar 60, Rib Lake 30
The host Edgar Wildcats pounced on Rib Lake early on Friday, building a 35-12 halftime lead and coasting from there to a 60-30 Marawood Conference crossover win. Edgar forced 25 turnovers and limited the Lady Redmen to 11-of-39 shooting from the field (28.2%) as they improved to 3-0.
Shooting was not much of a problem for Edgar, particularly Makenna Guden, who sank five 3-pointers and 23 points in the first half alone. She finished with 30.
Radtke came up one rebound shy of a double-double for Rib Lake, scoring 11 points and pulling down nine rebounds. She had two steals as well. Reinhardt had her best offensive night so far, hitting a 3-pointer while scoring six points.
Pelnis hit three of seven shots from the field and scored six points. She had two rebounds. Weinzatl had four points and five rebounds. Hopkins had a bucket, four rebounds and three steals. Gehrke hit a free throw.
