First Woman to Serve as Village Father
Mrs. Marie Mullins has become the first woman ever to serve on the Stratford village board. She won the election by beating Paul Hale by one vote, 36 to 35. Neither was an avowed candidate for the position, but both had signified their willingness to serve would she or he receive a majority.
New Sewer Facilities Being Constructed Here The village is constructing new sewer facilities from the site of the lift station at the junction of Hwy 97 and the North Western rail road tracks. This expensive work was undertaken because it had become necessary.

Stratford referendum fails
The Stratford School District will not be able to exceed the revenue cap by $150,000 the next five years. The district’s residents defeated the referendum 371-215, according to unofficial results from the Marathon County Clerk’s office Nine vocal entries advance to State
Stratford High School vocal music students took part in the Southern Marawood Solo-Ensemble festival. Stratford had 75 entries compete with nine advancing to the State Music Festival. Going to state are: Rachel Peters, Amanda Boville, Lee Ann Sutton, Nate Jicinsky, Jonathan Schweiger, Dustin Kincaid, Amanda Brusky and Sarah Brown, Carla Leonhardt and Lauren Martens, and the Swing Choir.
Problem solving contest
An annual problem solving contest for area 8th grade students was held at NTC. Stratford 8th graders participating were Jerremy Bores, Tammy Stuart, Laura Weigel, Derek Anderson, Erin Newell and Carissa Newlon. Nineteen area schools participated. Mark Kingston accompanied the team.

Honored for Service
Walter Doering was presented with a plaque as a gift of appreciation from the residents of the Town of Bern at their annual meeting. The award was presented by Erwin R. Schmidt, supervisor, in appreciation of Doering’s 32 years of dedicated service as a board member of the Township of Bern serving as its elected chairman for 27 years.
Village of Fenwood Elections
Leonard Leffel was re-elected president in the Village of Fenwood. Also elected were Pete Drexler, supervisor; Dan Leffel, clerk; Don Fischer, treasurer; Ervin Mueller, assessor; and Frank Steines, constable.
Marathon Bond issue defeated
The Marathon School District reported the school bond issue was voted down. According to District Administrator Douglas Chickering, the major factors, in his opinion, for the defeat, were the site selection and the economic situation in general. Asked what would happen to the entire issue now, Chickering said it “would lie dormant for the time being.”

Athens referendum fails
Athens Board of Education president Duane Natzke said that following a narrow 16 vote loss of a $6.975 million school building referendum, he no longer personally favors bringing back a K-12 building option to voters. “I feel we did everything we could to get information out to the people,” said Natzke. “Now we have to listen to the people. The people have said no three times. We need to look at another option.”
Cassel garage door is rammed
The Marathon County Sheriff’s Department reported that a Cassel man complained about a vehicle ramming his garage door. Police reports said that Robert Schneeberger, CTH S, complained that a vehicle totaled his garage door sometime between midnight and 6 a.m. on Sunday. The damage was estimated at $500.

Brian Schultz, Marathon, has designed and begun selling bass spinner baits that are easy to use, pretty much weedless and designed with colors that drive fish wild.

2000 – Let them eat pancakes
The St. Anthony’s Catholic School held a pancake breakfast to benefit Nicholas Schreiner, Athens. Schreiner was severely injured in a farm accident in December and is still recovering from the injuries he sustained. THE RECORD REVIEW ARCHIVES
