“A” Ratings Given
Five Stratford students received A ratings in the district Forensic contest held at Stevens Point. Students receiving an A were Evelyn Doodge, Kevin McNeight, Kathy Lassila, Dixie Weber and Dawn Thompson.
Tour of Chicago Firms
Steven Leick, son of Mr. and Mrs. Gilbert Leick, toured Chicago firms with the Agribusiness and Agriculture Economic Club from UW-Platteville. The club visited Associated Milk Producers, Inc., the Mercantile Exchange and the Board of Trade. In addition, they watched a Chicago Bulls-Philadelphia 76’ers basketball game. Steve plans a career in agribusiness.

Art Awards
Julie Karl and Sara Knoll took first and second place respectively in the Stratford Ladies Auxiliary to VFW Post 6352’s Young American Creative Patriotic Art Awards Contest for high school students. Karl’s entry will be entered in the state competition and it will be displayed at the group’s state convention. Both girls received a certificate and monetary prize. Betty Southworth is Youth Activities Chair for the Auxiliary.
Local bowlers attend state convention
The 81st annual meeting of the Wisconsin Women’s Bowling Association was held at the Paper Valley Hotel and Convention Center, Appleton. Attending as delegates for the Stratford’s Women’s Bowling Association were Beth Griffith and Donetta Ulrich, Stratford, and Ruth Hall and Marlene Socha, Edgar.
Anniversary plaques were distributed, as well as awards for superior performance and meritorious service. Other business included election of officers, site selection for upcoming tournaments, and memorial services honoring those bowlers who had passed away.

Athens Girl Scouts have dinner
Athens Girl Scouts and Brownies celebrated Girl Scout Week with a pot luck dinner and program at St. Anthony’s school. Senior President Jolie Esselmen capped the new senior scouts. They are Kathy Brown, Karen Schaetzl and Cindy Blake
Marathon Auxiliary meeting held
Nancy McCue was the guest speaker at the Marathon Auxiliary meeting. She told members to be aware of what is going on in the community, be watchdogs, be of help to the elderly and help youth programs. President Therese Szymanski ran the meeting.
Career day slated for Edgar high
A career education program will be held for students, teachers and parents at the Edgar Public Schools. The two-day program is designed to provide information on the development of attitudes, self-awareness, and values. Attention will be given to decision making, career exploration and the job interview.

Marathon officials approve water plant bids
Village of Marathon trustees and utility commission members fussed and fumed but, in the end, agreed to construct a new water filtration plant this year. The estimated cost is $1,823,225 or 13% over engineering estimates. The new reservoir and pump house will be built on the site of a demolished home just west of the Marathon Municipal Center.
Athens school candidates
Three candidates, including one incumbent, are running for two open seats on the Athens Board of Education. Voters in the Athens School District will get to choose between board incumbent Robert Peter, Lori Haines and Tom Ellenbecker.
Marawood All Conference
Edgar High winter athletes selected as “all conference” by the Marawood Conference include Trudy Artus, Lincoln Berg, Becky Mueller and Danielle Bergs.
2000 –
Fishing for ducks
St. Anthony’s Catholic Church, Athens, celebrated St. Patrick’s Day by holding its annual Irish Carnival in their auditorium. The carnival featured a cake walk, clowns, prizes and child games including “pluck-a-duck” fishing game.

2000 – Business skills competitors
Marathon High School placed third at a Business Skills competition. Top place winners for Marathon are Christopher Karlen, computer information systems; Shannon Nowicki, Business English; and Becky Adams, Machine Transcription.
