Couples inducted into Marriage Hall of Fame Couples inducted into Marriage Hall of Fame

Two local couples were recently inducted into the Wisconsin Family Council’s Marriage Hall of Fame.

WFC began this unique Hall of Fame in 2022 to honor both the institution of marriage and individual marriages that have gone the distance. Applying to be part of the Marriage Hall of Fame was open to any married couple in Wisconsin who has currently been married 60 or more years.

Each couple will receive a framed certificate recognizing their induction.

The Schugs

George and Jean Schug, Athens, have been married for 66 years. The Schugs were nominated by one of their children.

“I would like to nominate my parents for the marriage Hall of Fame. I believe they are most deserving of this recognition. They met through mutual friends back when roller skating and dances were the popular thing to do. They have weathered the storm through good times, and challenges. They have raised a family of five children, seven grand children, and five great-grandchildren. Almost four years ago, they lost one child to cancer and are now guiding a special needs grandchild.”

“I am proud of my parents. Everything they taught me, and instilled in me the values of life. They are most deserving of this recognition. At one point, my dad had five siblings and their spouses that were all married 60-plus years. Unfortunately, we have lost three of those family members. My dad’s mother was 106 years young when she passed away. We lost her during COVID when no one could go visit her. Before that dad would go see her, and take her sweet treats which she loved. Mom is the rock that holds it all together. Dad spent many years being away from home building bridges. Mom was always there holding it all together. Preparing food, cleaning, and accepting challenges that come with life.”

Marriage advice: “A family that worships together stays together.”

The Spindlers

Robert and Deloris Spindler, Stratford, have been married for 69 years, “We went to the same high school. Some of our friends were dating each other. That is how we met.”

Bob said that he knew the first time she walked into the gym he wanted to marry her.

The Spindlers, married since 1955, are blessed with seven children, 21 grandchildren, and 24 great-grandchildren.

Marriage advice: “Never go to bed mad at each, no matter how long it takes.”
