Senior Card Group

The Senior Citizens card group met on March 6 for weekly card playing at the Athens Area Fire and Ambulance Hall.

Two games of Sheepshead were played. David Perrodin won first place and Steve Klockziem came in second in the first game. Wil Strack won first and Sally Stubbe came in second in the second game.

Low score was Ron Lavicka. Newcomers are encouraged to come play Sheepshead every Thursday from 12:30-3:30 p.m. at the Athens fire hall.

College notes

Kenesha Schug has graduated from Northcentral Technical College in Wausau.

The following students were named to the fall 2024 president’s list at Northcentral Technical College in Wausau: Bailey Hanke, Celina Ellenbecker, Connor Butler, Jakob Annala, Katlyn Schreiner, Kenesha Schug, Makenna Sebold, Piper Wagner. To be named to the list, students must earn a 3.75 grade point average or above and successfully completed a minimum of six credits during the fall term.

Emma Ford, a junior studying at the Carlson School of Management, was named to the 2024 fall dean’s list at the University of Minnesota Twin Cities. To qualify for the list, a student must complete 12 or more letter-graded credits while attaining a 3.66 grade point average.

Lenten fish fries

St. Anthony’s Catholic Church will be hosting Lenten fish fries on the following Fridays: March 21 and April 4, from 4:30 to 7 p.m. The menu includes deep-fried fish or shrimp or baked fish, baked potato, potato salad or fries, plus coffee, milk and dessert.

Bring your entire family to story time at the Athens Branch Library on Wednesdays in March. Children of all ages and their parents or caregivers are invited to this 30-minute program. Library staff will read books, sing songs, and offer other literature-based activities. Upcoming Family Story Times will be March 12, 19 and 26, from 10:30 a.m. to 11 a.m.

Social Security class

Adults are invited to a class on getting ready for retirement and navigating Social Security benefits at the Athens Branch Library on Thursday, March 13, from 5:306:30 p.m. Navigating Social Security benefits can be challenging and preparing for retirement can leave you feeling overwhelmed with a lot of questions. This program is designed to provide answers and help you gather the information you need to make the best choice for you. Presenters will also discuss less commonly known benefits like family benefits, survivor’s benefits, and ex-spousal benefits. Free. For more info and to register, call 715257-7292.

American Legion

The latest meeting of the Athens American Legion was called to order by Commander Reuter with 13 members present. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited. Under new business, a $50 donation was made to the Post Prom Party and $300 was donated to the Athens Area Fire Department towards their benefit dance.

It was announced that the Health Equipment Lending Program (HELP) will have its mobile truck in Athens at Dollar General on Tuesdays from 10 to 11 a.m. starting March 18 and going through June. The HELP truck will be in other Central Wisconsin localities as well. Call 715-843-5985 with questions.

Veterans Day at the Capital is April 22. Registration is at wilegion.org/itshappening.

It was announced that post elections will be held at the April meeting.

Lunch and refreshments were served following the meeting. Door prizes were won by Bob Franz, Ken Knab and Marv Reuter.

Be’Tween the Lines

Tweens and teens ages 11-14 are invited to Edgar Branch Library on Friday, March 21, for a new monthly book club – where everyone gets to pick their own book. Just choose a book that follows the monthly theme and at each meeting, participants will discuss and socialize. The theme for March is spring. It’s okay if the book doesn’t fit the theme exactly. Family Game Night

All ages are invited to the Edgar Branch Library for Family Game Night on Wednesday, March 19, from 3 to 6 p.m. There will be a variety of board games and card games available to play, or you’re welcome to bring your own. Book club

The Stratford Book Club will meet at the Stratford Branch Library on Wednesday, March 19, at 1 p.m. to discuss “The Frozen River” by Ariel Lawhon. In 1789 Maine, midwife Martha Ballard investigates a shocking murder linked to an alleged rape that has shaken her small town, especially when her diary lands at the center of the scandal, threatening to tear both her family and her community apart. Gardening class

Adults are invited to a free class about planning and mapping a garden at the Stratford Branch Library on Thursday, March 13, from 5:30-6:30 p.m. UW-Extension horticulture educator, Janell Wehr, will cover essential elements when mapping and planting your garden, including the fundamental crop rotation to help prevent disease and pests. Participants will learn how to apply their planting plan to a garden map, keeping in mind spacing, heights, and successive gardening over the seasons. The event is free, but registration is required. Vintage Springtime Tea

The Marathon County Historical Society will host its 26th annual Vintage Springtime Tea on Thursday, March 20, at 2 p.m. in the Woodson History Center (410 Mcindoe St., Wausau). Enjoy a formal tea highlighted by sweet and savory courses and a custom blend of tea. Learn more about the 1920s and enjoy sweets, treats and tea.

There is limited seating, and no tickets will be sold at the event.
