Make Applications for Apartments

People who are interested in living in the new housing for the elderly being completed on Highway 97, can pick up application blanks at the Straford village hall. The housing was built to provide a place to live for elderly who have sold their farm or home and are unable to keep up with the work in their home.

FHA Officers

The 1975-76 officers of the FHA of Stratford High School are: president – Deb Bohman; vice-president – Christele Nikolay; secretary – Geri Steines; treasurer – Karen Wenzel; recreation leader – Alice Wenzel; historian – Jean Metzke; parliamentarian – Mary Steuber; and reporter – Kitty Weber. Chapter parents are Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Wenzel, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Delaney, Mr. and Mrs. Gilbert Leick and Mr. and Mrs. Frank Nikolay.

School board to ask for more money

The taxpayers of the Stratford School District will see a referendum on the April ballot asking for permission to tax $150,000 above the state-allowed revenue cap. The taxpayers approved a similar measure in 1996, when the board asked for additional taxing powers of $90,000 per year for each of five years.

Citizenship Education award

Barry Brubaker, a Social Studies teacher at Stratford High School, was recently awarded the Citizenship Education teacher award. Brubaker has taught for 31 years at Stratford Public Schools. He is an energetic citizen in the Stratford community, a member of the Stratford Community Band and an active member of the Lion’s International Club. Stratford VFW Post commander John Southworth presented the award to Brubaker.

Marathon to have own library branch

February 27 will be the date of the grand opening of the Marathon City branch of the Marathon County Public Library system. The branch, located in the fire hall meeting room, will be open 15 hours per week. Mrs. Margaret Buchberger is the librarian and will be assisted by Mrs. Helen Emerick, assistant librarian.

Arrow of Light given to two area Cub Scouts

Steven Hamann, Edgar, was presented with the Arrow of Light, at the Cub Scout pack 437 Blue and Gold banquet. Athens Cub Scout pack 450 also held its annual Blue and Gold banquet at St. Anthony’s school hall where Todd Barkow, Athens, received the Arrow of Light. This award is the highest award given in cub scouting.

Marathon bb clinches title

The number one small school in the state added another title to its long list of creditors by clinching the Marawood conference crown Friday night before a home town crowd estimated at 1,500. Marathon beat the second place conference team behind Randy Krautkramer’s 25 points.

A perfect game

Ruth Schaefer, a member of the Athens IGA bowling team, rolled a perfect 300 game last week at Kraft Lanes, Athens. The 300 game is a historic first ever rolled by a woman bowler for 25 years at Kraft Lanes. It was said that Kraft Lanes went completely quiet as she bowled her final frame.

Edgar planning committee report

A Long Range Planning Committee for Edgar Public School told the Edgar Board of Education that they have some recommendations moving forward. Their plans include restarting summer school, rebuilding the high school football field and track area, as well as broadening the public school’s course offerings with distance learning.

2000 – The Ballschwager

Nearly 90 Athens area residents brought cross country skis and snowshoes to enjoy a candle lit trail trek through the Athens Village Forest at the fourth annual Ballschwager ski party. Above, skiers on hay bales get toasty by a fire in Erbach Park.
