Senior Card Group

The Senior Citizens card group met on Feb. 13 for weekly card playing at the Athens Area Fire and Ambulance Hall.

Two games of Sheepshead were played. Tom Ellenbecker won first place and Andy Hoeft came in second in the first game. Butch Boris won first and Dave Perrodin came in second in the second game.

Low score was Norbert Lake. Newcomers are encouraged to come play Sheepshead every Thursday from 12:30-3:30 p.m. at the Athens fire hall.

College notes

Cobie Ellenbecker has graduated summa cum laude from UWStevens Point with a bachelor of science in math education.

Maple Grove School

The Maple Grove Governance Board met on Jan. 13. The meeting was called to order by President Kelly H. Minutes and Record Review notes were approved.

Robin H. gave a shout-out to the ARC of Lincoln County for monies for students that go to Maple Grove but live in Lincoln County.

Sections 6, 16 and 17 of the charter contract were reviewed. Motion made and seconded to accept changes and to look at it again if needed.

A playground update was given. The survey is done and the committee will share a drawing of the plan at the next meeting.

New clocks were installed, and now all classrooms are at the same time. There was discussion on a new secure door for the gym. A motion was made and seconded to install a new door with a fob security system. This work will be done by Quality Door. Both of these projects will be done with grant monies.

Whole Child Learning Plan was discussed. For open enrollment, the board needed to say how many spots are open at the school. A solid number, not a range, was needed. K-1 will be at 23 students, and 2-5 will be at 25 students. Special education will be eight students.

Also, per DPI, the open enrollment charter application form needs to be adjusted to show the open enrollment days and that it is a tuition free public school. Motion made and seconded to approve the changes.

The results of the Kerber Rose audit were presented. One corrective action that they suggested was more staff, but due to the size of the district, this cannot be done. The audit acknowledged that the school is doing good on all other aspects. A motion was made and seconded to accept the financial statement from KerberRose.

Monitoring report. The DPI is looking for when the Athens School District policies were accepted. A record of this could not be found. The charter board has formally accepted the Athens School District policies. Motion made and seconded.Approved: 7 votes aye, 0 nay.

Robin reported on the sound system for the gym. Wausau Music Center came out and said the speakers were good but the mics will need to be replaced.

As stated earlier, all 14 clocks have been replaced. The lounge is being updated. PTO paid for the paint and the new cabinet.

Archery has started and students are loving it.

School screening started the week of Jan. 13, and the Star Lab started the week of Jan 6.

Andrea S. brought up that the district will be doing a property inventory and shared the policy that will go to the school board.

FOMC budget was approved. Motion made to accept and seconded.

The PTO will host an open house at the school on Thursday, March 13, from 5-7 p.m., with a free meal of soup and breadsticks. A pancake breakfast is planned for Sunday, March 30.

Family Story Time

Bring your entire family to story time at the Athens Branch Library. Children of all ages and their parents or caregivers are invited to this 30-minute program. Library staff will read books, sing songs, and offer other literature-based activities. The next Family Story Time will be held on Wednesday, Feb. 26, from 10:30 to 11 a.m.

Bingo at St. Stephen
