Few Candidates for Boards

After many years of service to the Stratford school district, Mel Guenther decided he had enough and has refused to run for reelection to the school board. Mr. Bob Ulrich has filed to succeed himself.

There are three trustee positions vacant, but only one candidate has filed for reelection, Mel Schmidt. Mel Guenther has filed to succeed himself as village president. The terms of Charles Drexler and Tom Stack expire this year, but neither has filed for reelection. MARATHON JOURNAL

Bachelor Survival Class Graduates

A class entitled “Bachelor Survival” was originated at the Marathon high school last fall with a stated purpose of helping young men to become self-suficient in the handling of domestic duties when they are on their own. Courses covered during the semester were buying food, preparing and serving nutritious, appealing meals, laundry, cleaning, mending and sewing. Seventeen young men learned the fundamentals of home economics to make bachelor living easier. STRATFORD JOURNAL

Stratford’s Finest

Don Weber was presented with the Stratford’s Finest Award at the Stratford Area Chamber of Commerce’s annual meeting. Weber, a lifelong citizen of Stratford, is a past member of the Stratford Village Board, a member of St. Joseph’s Church, a Korean War veteran, a Stratford VFW member, and a past fire chief of the Stratford Area Fire Department. Weber was a village employee for 25 years and is now a crossing guard for the school district.

Stockholders of Athens bank meet

The annual stockholders of The Bank of Athens met. Cashier John T. Kulas will be retiring shortly and his 45 years of service to the bank was gratefully acknowledged by President Gordon Connor. Kulas started at the bank in 1930.

New officers elected

New officers were recently elected for the Marathon Social Service club. Officers are president, Tom Kraemer, vice president, Norm Gertschen and secretary-treasurer, Doug Chickering.

Edgar Senior Citizens meeting

The Edgar Senior Citizens met at the village hall. After their regular meeting cards were played by the eighteen present. Prizes were won by the following: king’s corners, Mrs. Lucy Socha; schmier, Miss Lucy Shortner; sheepshead, Peter Napierala, Ed Kurtzweil and Walter Kratwell.

Permit enforcement will get tougher

The Athens Village Board told building inspector Chuck Kornack that it would beef up enforcement of village building codes. Kornack told trustees that the village building ordinances were, in some places, out of date and that he still has some trouble getting some residents to obtain building permits prior to starting construction.

Packers pitch Lambeau proposal

Green Bay Packer President Bob Harlan came to the area on Monday to call on the state legislature to create a sales tax district in Brown County to generate a little over half the money needed for a $295 million remodeling project at Lambeau Field.

Harlan said that the plan represented “one chance” to transform historic Lambeau Field into a year-round tourist mall that, along with 10,000 added seats and privacy luxury suites, would revive team revenues and ensure team competitiveness in the future.

2000 – Flying over the ice

Skater Cassie Lukasko, Edgar, enjoyed some fast ice during a weekend outing on Scotch Creek in Edgar.
