Kay Kessler will come to speak to the F.H.A. on her career as a TV news interviewer and announcer. The public is invited to attend the presentation which will be held at Stratford high school. Mrs. Wisnewski is the advisor.
Girls’ Basketball Season Starts
The Stratford girls open their basketball season on January 14 with a game with Edgar here. Stratford has five returning lettermen out of the eight girls who played last year. STRATFORD JOURNAL

School geography bee
“Name the capital city of the only communist country in the Carribean.”
Cassie Ortner, daughter of Charles and Sherri Ortner, fifth grade student at Stratford Elementary, knew the answer was Havana, giving her a win in the school level geography bee on Monday.
The geography bee is part of the national Geography Bee. Ortner will go on to compete at the next level by taking a written test. The top 100 scorers in each state and territory will be eligible to compete in their state Bee on April 7.
The school bee went ten rounds before a winner was announced.
Sending it to the voters
The Stratford School Board will ask the voters to exceed the revenue cap by $150,000 for each of the next five school years. The referendum will be held Tuesday, April 4, along with the school board elections.
In 1996, the voters were asked to allow the board to exceed the revenue cap by $90,000 through the 2000-2001 school year. It was approved along with the building referendum, which included the work on Tiger Stadium and the high school addition.

Athens Apartments
Construction is continuing on the eightplex apartment unit being built in Athens. This is one of five such units being built in Marathon County under the Housing Authority. Edgar, Spencer, Mosinee and Stratford will receive the other units. The apartments are expected to be ready for renters by July 1.
Marathon hires crossing guard
Mrs. Verna Baneck, Marathon, has been hired as the first adult crossing guard in the village. Announcement of her employment was made at the regular meeting of the Marathon Village Board. Baneck started her duties this week at the crossing on Fourth and Main streets in the village.
Edgar riders warned
Snowmobile riders in and around the village of Edgar are asked to observe the rules and signs marking the trails. Several complaints have been received about the snowmobiles using the streets and officers of the Edgar Sno Kats snowmobile club are urging riders to be more thoughtful.

Edgar school board resignation
In a surprise move, Edgar Board of Education member Kathy Ross turned in a letter of immediate resignation, leaving the school board a year before her term of office is scheduled to expire. Ross participated in the regular board business and only after an executive session, handed in a letter of resignation.
Athens police chief is selected
The Athens Village Board has hired Mike Rayala, currently a sergeant with the Marathon Police Department, as its new police chief. The board unanimously approved hiring Rayala at a starting salary of $35,500 at a special board meeting. The new chief’s official starting date is Feb. 1.
2000 – Tea Time
The congregation of the Christ United Church of Christ, Athens, hosted its annual Epiphany tea celebration. The tea is a post Christmas celebration that has been held annually for more than two decades in the Athens area. THE RECORD-REVIEW ARCHIVES
2000 – Edgar Eagle Scouts
Andrew Paul, Timothy Hall and Benjamin Borchardt received Eagle Scout awards, Scouting’s highest rank, in front of one hundred-forty relatives and friends at a banquet held at the Edgar Public School.
