1974 Ag Reort Is Far From Good News

After looking at the dire economic conditions faced by Wisconsin agriculutre in 1974, State Secretary of Agriculture, Donald E. Wilkinson says, “there’s got to be a ray of hope somewhere and I believe it lies with our farmers’ diversification.” The combination of bad weather, depressed prices, continued inflation, supply shortages, etc., brought about a deep economic recession to which our agriculture is directly tied. Y2K glitch found

The Village of Stratford had its first Y2K glitch Tuesday afternoon. Village clerk Margaret Brubaker told the finance committee that the village’s payroll computer program is not working. She said that the village has a written statement from the makers of the program stating that it is Y2K compliant. She will be working to find a solution to the problem. Packer license plates may help fund renovations at Lambeau Field State Senator Russ Decker announced that he will introduce legislation to create a Packer license plate with a portion of the revenue going toward renovations at Lambeau Field.

“This is a totally voluntary way for Packer fans to turn their support into a source of revenue for the team to renovate Lambeau Field, Decker said.

“If 100,000 people bought a Packer Plate, about $4 million would be generated,” Decker said. He said that 107,000 paid $200 last year to purchase a share of Packer stock.

RECORD REVIEW Athens village board members are asking snowmobilers using the designated routes through the village to observe the five miles per hour speed limit and to stop at all cross streets. Areas receiving the most complaints include the alleys from the Coop to the Depot south of town.

Three adult classes offered at Edgar High Three adult evening classes have been scheduled at Edgar. The classes include Woodworking, Personal Income Tax and Meatcutting.

55 mph law stiffened?

American motorists are slow to change their driving habits unless the government gives them a nudge, even in these times of threatened new gasoline shortages and price hikes. The Department of Transportation is drafting a bill for the new Congress covening. It would penalize states which fail to enforce the national 55-mile-perhour speed limit.

School boards contested

There will be a four way race for two open seats on the Marathon Board of Education. Incumbent Sharon Seubert has returned nomination papers along with Brian Gumtz, Ron Wilichowski and Alvin Lutz. In the Athens School District three candidates will be running to fill two seats. The candidates are incumbent Robert Peter, Tom Ellenbecker, and Lori Haines.

Four decades of service

Town of Frankfort chairman, Bernie Dahlke, presented Ray Bandle with a Wisconsin Towns Association plaque recognizing him for serving 40 years as a township supervisor. The presentation took place at a dinner in Bandle’s honor held last week at Mr. D’s Establishment, Town of Frankfort.

2000 – Pie baking contest

Taking first place at the annual pie baking contest for Foods 1 was a chocolate mint ice cream pie made by Michelle Brock, Candace Micke and Shannon Heeg.
