Mullins Sell Factory

Mr. and Mrs. Charles Mullins announced the sale of their Pioneer Cheese Factory, route 1, Stratford. It had been operated for over 20 years by the Mullins’, manufacturing mainly cheddar cheese. It was disclosed that the plant will be closed down and the patron’s milk will be trucked to the AMPI plant in Abbotsford.

Teachers get new contract

The Stratford School Board and the Stratford Education Association both ratified a new two-year teachers’ contract. It includes a total package increase of four percent for each of the two years. The base salary for a new teacher with a bachelor’s degree was $26,102 last year.

Tiger matmen has strong season start

The Stratford Tigers wrestling squad took charge of its meet against Elcho winning 683. Getting pins for the Tigers were Shawn Kitchner, Aaron Jochimsen, Denny Varsho, Adam Spindler, Jordan Newmier and Matt Steiner. MARATHON JOURNAL

Marathon Wins the Biggie

The Stratford Tigers sustained a hard loss in boys basketball to the Marathon Red Raiders. The game was a battle between two undefeated teams and one had to lose. The final score was Marathon 79 and Stratford 67. High scorers for Marathon were Randy Krautkramer, 26 and Claude Seubert, 24. Stratford high scores came from Bob Young, 18 and Kevin Leick, 15.

Break in at mill reported

Friday morning, Gerald Albrecht reported to Athens Police Chief Gary A. Nehrbass that someone broke a window in the office of the Farmers Mill, Athens. The subject then crawled through the window and took $17 in change from the cash register along with ten pairs of work gloves. This is the first burglary reported in Athens in several months.

Brauns combine to top Edgar, 58-41

The Braun brothers combination of Andy and Steve led the Athens Bluejays to a win over Edgar. Both Brauns scored 14 points each. For Edgar, Larry Stencil was the leading scorer in the game as he had a game high 16 points.

Donate tables

Members of the Marathon VFW Post 469 of the American Legion Auxiliary donated four, eight foot tables to be used in the Marathon village hall. The tables are purchased with proceeds from the concession stand at the ball park. Sylvia Cramer was in charge of the purchasing.

AHS seniors take armed services test

Athens High School seniors took the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery of Tests. Jake Rogacewski, guidance counselor, made arrangements for the testing program and assisted in supervising. The reported scores from ASVAB identify combinations of abilities which are relevant to success in particular clusters of jobs.

Firemen put out chimney fire

Athens and Edgar firemen responded to a Town of Rietbrock chimney fire before it could do any significant damage. The firemen successfully put out the fire at the home George Schug, STH 97. After gaining entry to the locked home by breaking a small window, firemen extinguished the fire. Damage was limited to the broken window valued at $38.
