Stratford State Bank Opens New Building Today
The new Stratford State Bank is located at the corner of Elm and Weber Avenues, on Highway 97. A formal open house for the public is being planned for the latter part of January. The Stratford State Bank’s assets are presently over $10,000,000 and are led by president Chas. Krause.
Lions Christmas Party
The annual Christmas party for the Stratford Lions was held for twenty-four Lions and their wives. Jim Brandt led the group in singing a familiar Christmas carol before the meal. Lions Ray Kaiser and Bob Leonhardt distributed a gift from the club to each of the ladies present.

Fire hall study says ‘need more space’
The Stratford Area Fire Department plans to hire an architect in January. The architect will take plans already drawn up and make changes and corrections to them as needed. The current fire hall is just too small according to a study done by Design Unlimited. In order to meet the needs of the fire department, the study says an additional 6,000 square feet would have to be added.
Winter wonderland
The Stratford Area Chamber of Commerce along with the help of several area people and businesses hosted this year’s Christmas in the Park celebration. Even with no snow on the ground, Stratford’s Klemme Park looked like a winter wonderland with all the Christmas lights and decorations. MARATHON JOURNAL

Award night held
The Wien Workers 4-H Club held its Achievement night. Jayne Bauman, president introduced the new officers for the coming year. They will be president, Mary Streit; vice president, Sandy Bandle; secretary, Veronica Dahlke; treasurer, Rick Syring; reporter, Susan Streit, and historian, Kay Leffel. The trophy for the outstanding member went to Mary Streit.
Annual meeting held
The Athens Advancement and Agricultural Association held its annual meeting. James Braun, Jerome Sjostrom and Arnold Steidinger were reelected to the Board of Directors.

Village of Marathon has Y2K emergency plan
The village of Marathon will be ready for the Millenium. Police Chief Lauren Knoeck told village trustees that emergency personnel in the village have planned how to handle any power or telephone shutdowns due to a Y2K computer glitch on Jan. 1, 2000.
Big Buck winner
Edgar High School student Cody Soczka bagged a nine point whitetail buck during the recently completed gun deer season and earned his high school’s “Big Buck” contest first place. The deer’s antler spread measured 17 ½ inches.
Rausch dairy open house
Athens well-wishers got a look at the new 109 by 384 foot freestall dairy barn and double 16 milk parlor at Rausch Farms, one mile east of Athens. Family members on the 500cow, third generation farm are Rick and Connie Rausch and their children Mike, Andy and Matt and Rick’s brother, Alan.
Holiday plants
Edgar High School FFAstudents get ready for this week’s poinsettia sale and distribution. The 250 scarlet holiday plants will be donated to churches and Co-op Program businesses, as well as sold to the public.
1999 – Bringing home the tree

Citizen of the Year
Edgar Area Jaycees president Jill Tess presents Rick Kaiser with its annual “Citizen of the Year” award. Kaiser is an Edgar Jaycees, Edgar Fire Department lieutenant and president of the Halder Lions. Kaiser and his wife, Tess, have four daughters, Karla, Kelly, Katie and Kasey.
