Senior Card Group

The Senior Citizens card group met on Nov. 7 for weekly card playing at the Athens Area Fire and Ambulance Hall.

Two games of Sheepshead were played. Steve Klockziem won first place and Rick Schaetzl came in second in the first game. Andy Hoef won first and Alvira Henrichs came in second in the second game.

Low score was Norbert Lake. Newcomers are encouraged to come play Sheepshead every Thursday from 12:30-3:30 p.m. at the Athens fire hall.

Family Story Time

Bring your entire family to story time at the Athens Branch Library. Children of all ages and their parents or caregivers are invited to this 30minute program. Library staff will read books, sing songs, and offer other literature-based activities. Family Story Times will be held from 10:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. every Wednesday in November.

VFW, American Legion

VFW Post 8527, American Legion Post 4, and VFW Auxiliary gathered for their annual Christmas party on Nov. 9 at Country Aire, A social hour and meal were had.

Guests in attendance were from the Never Forgotten Honor Flight and the Marathon County Veterans Services Office.

Essay winners from the area middle schools read their winning essays which had been judged by the VFW auxiliary.

A donation to the Never Forgotten Honor Flight from the VFW and American Legion posts were presented to Roxy Erickson from the organization in the amount of $2,000.

‘Days Gone By’ exhibit

The Athens Area Historical Society will host a collection of items from “Athens Days Gone By” from 1 to 7 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 7, and from 1 to 3 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 8. The event will be held in the meeting room of the Athens Fire Hall, and is open to the public free of charge.

Craft sale

Trinity Lutheran Church and School, 301 Elm St., will be hosting a craft sale event on Sunday, Nov. 24, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

EDGAR

Giving Tree The Circle of Joy is sponsoring a “Giving Tree” for the Edgar area at Nicolet National Bank. Decorations will be placed on the tree by Friday, Nov. 22, with a child’s age, clothing size and gift suggestions. Gifts should be wrapped and returned to the bank by Monday, Dec. 16.

Christmas at Oak Street Edgar will host its annual Christmas at Oak Street Park on Sunday, Dec. 8, featuring a visit from Santa Claus, a parade from Nicolet Bank to the park, and a live Nativity scene with real animals. Treats and hot chocolate will be available, and St. Stephen’s Church will serve chili and cheesy chicken chowder soup from noon to 3 p.m. in the church basement.

Volunteers are needed to dress in costumes and to donate bars and cookies. Call Karen at Stark’s at 715-352-2577 to volunteer.

Needlework Social Hour Adults are invited to craft and chat at a Needlework Social Hour on Monday, Nov. 25, from 4-6 p.m., at the Edgar Branch Library. Free. Whether it’s knitting, crocheting, embroidery or mending, everyone is welcome to bring their projects and chat. This event is free and open to the public; no registration required. Family History Basics

Adults can learn how to trace their family history using Ancestry on Monday, Dec. 2, from 1:30-3 p.m. at the Edgar Branch Library. Participants will be guided through some of the basics of genealogical research before covering some of the basics of Ancestry, which patrons can access at any library location. Patrons will also complete a basic family tree chart and begin working on family info sheets. The event is free; no registration required. Call 715-352-3155 for more information.

Book club The Edgar Book Club will meet on Tuesday, Dec. 10, at noon to discuss “Winter Street” by Elin Hilderbrand. A family reunion at Kelley Quinn’s Nantucket inn is thrown into turmoil by the personal dramas of his four adult children and the discovery of his second wife’s infidelity. Deer disposal dumpster The Central Wisconsin Conservation Club Inc., in conjunction with Marathon County Waste Management, will be sponsoring a dumpster for the disposal of deer carcass waste (rib cages, heads, legs and fat scrap) during the upcoming deer firearms season. The dumpster will be placed in the Edgar Waste Disposal entrance, located off of East Limits Road. There will also be a separate container placed there for unwanted deer hides, which will be donated to the Lions Camp for the Blind. The dumpster will be placed there on Nov. 22 thru Dec. 16.

This program is being done as a surrounding community service to help to keep our environment cleaner from improperly disposed waste in our rural ditches. People are asked to only use the dumpster for the waste that it is intended for so that this project can continue and grow in the future.

Fake snow sensory play Children are invited to visit the Edgar Branch Library on Wednesday, Dec., 4, from 3 to 5 p.m., to have fun playing with snow – indoors. Participants will make fake snow using baking soda and hair conditioner, and library staff will have an assortment of arctic animal toys and molds to use with the snow. Computers basics Adults are invited to a two-part series of computer basics class for beginners at the Edgar Branch Library on Monday, Nov. 25, from 1:30-3 p.m. In this session, we will cover some of the basics you need in order to get online and connect with friends and family. This class will help you become more comfortable and confident using technology. This event is free and open to the public. Space is limited so registration is required. MARATHON

Giving Tree A Circle of Joy Christmas “Giving Tree” will be located at People’s State Bank, Marathon. Ornaments with children’s ages and wish lists have been placed on the tree. All gifts are to be wrapped and returned to the bank tree no later than Friday, Dec. 9. If you are interested in participating pick up a name at Peoples State Bank or the village of Marathon City office.

President Terri Steinke called the meeting to order. The Pledge of Allegiance and Creed I, were recited.

Roll Call question: What was your favorite game as a child? Five members were present.

The secretary’s report was read by Gloria Kreager and approved as read. The treasurer’s report was read by Judy Baeseman. Judy was voted in by an anonymous vote for the treasurer’s position.

Members expressed their sympathies for Jackie Carattini’s family for their loss. Jackie was the former Marathon County Home Economist. Members recalled her Leader Lessons.

Pennies for Friendship were collected, with the money going to Haiti, as part of the Wisconsin Association for Home and Community Education, Inc. International project.

A number of local children received mittens that were made and donated. At a later date, the group will also be doing a shoebox collection for Nicaragua.

The next meeting will be the Christmas get-together on Monday, Dec. 11, at noon, at the home of Terri Steinke. In case of bad weather, the meeting will be rescheduled to Dec. 12.

The December meeting will include a cookie exchange. Each member is to bring three dozen cookies to be exchanged. Secret Pals will be revealed and presented with a gift.

The meeting was adjourned with Creed II. The song sung was God Bless America.

The hostess showed pictures from Uganda, where her granddaughter is living and working in her Ministry/ Abide Tribe Ministry.

Thanksgiving Bingo was played, with all receiving prizes.

Book club

The Marathon City Book Club will meet on Monday, Dec, 9, at 5:45 p.m. to discuss “Carrie Soto is Back” by Taylor Jenkins Reid. A retired tennis champion comes out of retirement at age 37 after watching a young phenom beat her long-standing record at the 1994 US Open. Call 715-443-2775 for more information.

Mini Makers

Stop by the Marathon City Branch Library anytime between 1 and 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 4, for Mini Makers, an opportunity to explore process art. Process art is child-led and focuses on creation instead of following specific directions. Each branch will have a different project each month so that children and caregivers have an opportunity to unleash their creativity while meeting other community members.
