Becher’s TV Robbed

Becher’s TV store was burglarized of about $200 worth of merchandise that was in their display window Wednesday morning at about 2:15. Becher states that the only articles missing are an 8-track tape player, a crime alarm kit on display and a calculator.

Work Starts on New Apartment

Work is expected to start right away on the new eight-apartment building in Stratford. The apartment building will be located on a lot on Highway 97, east of the high school football field. The new building will face directly on to Myrtle Street.

Gun deer season opens

Beth Arthur of the DNR set up a station in the entrance of the Baltus service station this past Saturday. Arthur was conducting a field study to determine the ages of the deer shot during the opening day of the gun deer hunting season.

Stratford State Bank elects two new directors The Board of Directors of the Stratford State Bank has announcedthe election of two new directors. Greg Leick was elected to succeed Charles Krause and Dan Drexler was elected to replace Richard Kraus. MARATHON JOURNAL

Legion Auxiliary Meets

American Legion Auxiliary of Marathon met. Delegates Sylvia Cramer, Alvina Szymanski and Lou Anne Seliger reported on the fall conference held at King. Jan Buchberger and Delores Heindl were appointed to purchase and bag the candy for the kiddies Christmas party.

Report made to Legion

The Athens American Legion Chapman Belter Post No. 4 met and were led by Commander Melvin Schmidt. Carl Schreiner and Jay Heier, who had been sponsored by the Legion to Trees For Tomorrow, gave a report of their activities.

Athens Homemakers meet

Mrs. Harry Hoff hosted the Athens Extension Homemakers in November. Mrs. Ferd Paul presided over the meeting. The leader lesson on equal rights was given by Paul and Mrs. Ernest Sollberger.

Edgar Girl Scouts honor parents

The Edgar Girl Scouts honored their families at the annual Girl Scout banquet held in the school’s all-purpose room. The flag ceremony was held with Brownie Sara Guralski, Junior Marianne Heidman and Cadettes Theresa Knetter, Kathy Schneider and Cindy Burke presenting the colors.

Bringing Home the Gold

The Edgar Wildcats football team captured the WIAADiv. 5 state championship in Madison last Thursday. The team defeated Iola-Scandinavia 22-6 with speed and intensity. Tyler Berg rushed for 154 yards in 24 attempts in the game. The team finishes with a 14-0 season record.

One act players

Members of this year’s Marathon High School one-act play thespians performed for students at St. Mary’s School, Marathon. The high school students participated in the Wisconsin High School Forensics Association festival with a performance of “The Courters.”

Athens Tech Center

The Athens High School Alpha Tech Center will feature guest speaker George Million, Director of the Marathon County Health Department. Million will be available to answer questions about how the new millennium and the Y2K can and will affect residents.

1999 – How do you spell state title?

Wildcat fans team up to spell out the name of their favorite team at Camp Randall. Balmy temperatures in the mid-60’s under a bright sun made the shirtless spelling exercise perfectly comfortable.

Athens High School student Bethany Radde was the top point-getter in last week’s Athens Education Association trivia contest. The contest was held to mark American Education Week.
