Cheerleaders Train at Wausau West
Some members of the Stratford cheerleading squad and their advisor, Mrs. June Nichols, attended the National Cheerleading Association clinic held this past weekend. Lead levels in village water are high
The Stratford Water and Electric Commission reported that some homes in theStratford community have elevated lead levels in their drinking water. The laws require that lead levels not exceed 15 parts per billion while Stratford water has reached 15.1ppb. The levels are barely higher than they were in the past year. Ed Crownhart, Stratford, a part-time electrical apprenticeship instructor at Nicolet Area Technical College and Mid-State Technical College, received the Associated Builders & Contractors (ABC) of Wisconsin Apprenticeship âInstructor of the Yearâ award. The award is presented to the instructor who exhibits the highest level of commitment to apprenticeship training. MARATHON JOURNAL

Shelley Rae Ringle Receives DAR Award
Miss Shelley Rae Ringle has been chosen by the Marathon High School faculty to represent the school in the Good Citizen Competition in the DAR organization. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Ringle. Shelley is a senior at Marathon High School and her future plans call for her to attend the University at Eau Claire, majoring in nursing.

Football may be dropped at EHS
The regular monthly meeting of the Edgar Public School Board of Education was held with the main topic being the possibility of dropping football from extracurricular activities. Present for the meeting was head football coach Charles Ebert who recommended to the board that football be either dropped or some other alternative be reached to solve the problem of lack of participation on the part of the students. Edgar completed the past season with a total of 17 players on the team.
Athens students compete in UW-Point math contest
Twelve Athens students competed in the Mathematics contest sponsored by the Central Wisconsin Mathematics League at Stevens Point. Competing for Athens were Diane Ewan, Karen Schaetzel, Greg Hamann, Brian Mroczenski, Steve Braun, Leslee Henrichs, Kathy Hamann, Norma Mroczenski, Jane Brown, Lori Giese, Mitchell Viegut and Vanessa Gianoli.

Marathon hires
The Marathon Board of Education acted on a number of personnel items. The board accepted the resignation of Deb Gertschen as school cook and hired Dawn Snyder as a new cook. It was anounced that the school board seats of Claude Baumann and Sharon Seubert will be up for re-election in April.
Return to Camp Randall
Edgar Wildcats will meet Iola-Scandinavia in a return trip to Camp Randall for the two undefeated teams in Division 5. Edgar head football coach Jerry Sinz said the match-up will be something like David and Goliath since the Iola linebackers measure all over six feet and weigh-in from 240 to 280 pounds Racing award
Marathon motorcycle racer Tony Lenard received a second place season finish award at the annual meeting of the American Motorcycle Association District 16 Council. After winning dirt track state championships in 1973 and 1974, Lenard left racing for 23 years, returning this year as a senior class competitor.
1999 â Better than yours
Lora Landwehr, Matt Steiner and Denny Varsho teamed up to create the âBetter than Yoursâ chili which took first place in the sixth annual foods contest held at Stratford High School.
