Senior Card Group

The Senior Citizens card group met on Nov. 7 for weekly card playing at the Athens Area Fire and Ambulance Hall.

Two games of Sheepshead were played. Steve Klockziem won first place and Andy Hoef came in second in the first game. Sally Stubbe won first and Butch Boris came in second in the second game.

Low score was Wil Strack. Newcomers are encouraged to come play Sheepshead every Thursday from 12:30-3:30 p.m. at the Athens fire hall.

Family Story Time

Bring your entire family to story time at the Athens Branch Library. Children of all ages and their parents or caregivers are invited to this 30-minute program. Library staff will read books, sing songs, and offer other literature-based activities. Family Story Times will be held from 10:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. every Wednesday in November.

Athens VFW Post 8527

The monthly meeting of Athens VFW post 8527 was held Nov. 6, by Commander Marv Reuter. The Pledge of Allegiance was said by the 16 members in attendance.

Several donations were made as follows:

â–  $200 to Cheryl Engel for Christmas party door prizes.

â–  $300 to Cheryl Engel for the purpose of purchasing Christmas gift cards for veterans that are homebound or in assisted living facilities in the amount of $300.

â–  A gift card to Rick Ewan, in appreciation for bugling at funerals.

â–  $1,000 to the Never Forgotten Honor Flight.

Dave Nash was in attendance and has asked to join the VFW post. His request was approved by the membership.

Pat David announced that the 7th District winter meeting will be held in Marshfield on Jan. 11. 2025.

Refreshments and lunch were enjoyed following the meeting.

Attendance door prizes were given to Ron Lavicka, Dave Zoromski and Mark Weiler The next monthly meeting will be held on Wednesday, Dec. 4, at 7 p.m. at the fire hall back room. New members are always welcome.

Craft sale

Trinity Lutheran Church and School, 301 Elm St., will be hosting a craft sale event on Sunday, Nov. 24, from 10 a.m. to 2 pm.

Giving Tree

The Circle of Joy is sponsoring a “Giving Tree” for the Edgar area at Nicolet National Bank. Decorations will be placed on the tree by Friday, Nov. 22, with a child’s age, clothing size and gift suggestions. Gifts should be wrapped and returned to the bank by Monday, Dec. 16.

Needlework Social Hour

Adults are invited to craft and chat at a Needlework Social Hour on Monday, Nov. 25, from 4-6 p.m., at the Edgar Branch Library. Free. Whether it’s knitting, crocheting, embroidery or mending, everyone is welcome to bring their projects and chat. This event is free and open to the public; no registration required. Family Story Time

Children of all ages and their parents and caregivers are invited to the Edgar Branch Library on the first and third Tuesday of November for Family Story Time. Enjoy learning with all of your children through stories, songs and other literature- based activities in this 30minute program. The next Family Story Time is scheduled from 11 to 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 19.

Deer disposal dumpster

The Central Wisconsin Conservation Club Inc., in conjunction with Marathon County Waste Management, will be sponsoring a dumpster for the disposal of deer carcass waste (rib cages, heads, legs and fat scrap) during the upcoming deer firearms season. The dumpster will be placed in the Edgar Waste Disposal entrance, located off of East Limits Road. There will also be a separate container placed there for unwanted deer hides, which will be donated to the Lions Camp for the Blind. The dumpster will be placed there on Nov. 22 thru Dec. 16.

This program is being done as a surrounding community service to help to keep our environment cleaner from improperly disposed waste in our rural ditches. People are asked to only use the dumpster for the waste that it is intended for so that this project can continue and grow in the future.

Computers basics

Adults are invited to a two-part series of computer basics class for beginners at the Edgar Branch Library on Monday, Nov. 18 and Monday, Nov. 25 from 1:30-3 p.m. In this session, we will cover some of the basics you need in order to get online and connect with friends and family. This class will help you become more comfortable and confident using technology. This event is free and open to the public. Space is limited so registration is required. Giving Tree

A Circle of Joy Christmas “Giving Tree” will be located at People’s State Bank, Marathon. Ornaments with children’s ages and wish lists will be placed on the tree or available from tellers by Friday, Nov. 15. All gifts are to be wrapped and returned to the bank tree no later than Friday, Dec. 9. If you are interested in participating pick up a name at Peoples State Bank or the village of Marathon City office.

Medicare 101

Adults can learn Medicare basics on Tuesday, Nov.19 from 4 to 5 p.m., at the Stratford Branch Library. This presentation by local agent Donna Heil will include the difference between Medicare parts, what steps you should take when you turn 65, and answering any questions you may have about Medicare. This program is noncommercial in nature and for informational purposes only. This event is free and open to the public. No registration is required. Book club

The Stratford Book Club will meet on Wednesday, Nov. 20, at 1 p.m. to discuss “The World Played Chess” by Robert Dugoni. As his own son gets ready for college, Vincent Bianco recalls his final summer working before college in 1979 during which he received an education of a lifetime while working alongside two Vietnam veteran as a laborer on a construction site.
