ATHENS

Senior Card Group

The Senior Citizens card group met on Oct. 31 for weekly card playing at the Athens Area Fire and Ambulance Hall.

Two games of Sheepshead were played. Steve Klockziem won first place and Tom Ellenbecker came in second in the first game. Alvira Henrichs won first and Rick Schaetzl came in second in the second game.

Low score was Henry Faber. Newcomers are encouraged to come play Sheepshead every Thursday from 12:30-3:30 p.m. at the Athens fire hall.

Family Story Time

Bring your entire family to story time at the Athens Branch Library. Children of all ages and their parents or caregivers are invited to this 30-minute program. Library staff will read books, sing songs, and offer other literature-based activities. Family Story Times will be held from 10:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. every Wednesday in November.

Mini-Makers

Stop by the Athens Branch Library anytime during open hours Nov. 4-9 to explore process art. Process art is child-led and focuses on creation instead of following specific directions. Each branch will have a different project each month so that children and caregivers have an opportunity to unleash their creativity while meeting other community members.

Craft sale

Trinity Lutheran Church and School, 301 Elm St., will be hosting a craft sale event on Sunday, Nov. 24, from 10 a.m. to 2 pm.

VFW Auxiliary

The Athens VFW Auxiliary was called to order on Oct. 22 by President Ruth Weiler with 11 members present at the Athens Fire and Ambulance back room at 6:30 p.m.

Chaplain Cheryl Engel read the opening prayer and the Salute to the Flag was said by all.

The secretary’s report was given and approved.

General Orders were read. The fall Council of Administration meeting will be held at Portage VFW Post VFW Post on Nov. 16. Please let Ruth Weiler know by Nov. 8 if you plan to attend.

Members were reminded that Nov. 11 is Veterans Day.

Julie Ellenbecker gave the treasurer’s report and it was approved. The quarterly audit was done.

Cheryl Engel gave the Sunshine Report.

Gloria Lavicka and Dennis Sikorski reported that the unit has received many essays this year for the “Voice of Democracy” and “Patriots Pens.”

The flag retirement receptacle has been moved to the Athens Municipal Center. A motion was made by Gloria Lavicka and seconded by Becky Knab to pay for the Veterans Dinner for the Veterans and auxiliary members at the Athenian Living Center. Motion carried.

The closing ceremony was read by chaplain Cheryl Engel.

The next meeting will be Tuesday, Nov. 26 and will feature a Christmas potluck and gift exchange of gift worth $5 to $10.

Family Story Time

Children of all ages and their parents and caregivers are invited to the Edgar Branch Library on the first and third Tuesday of November for Family Story Time. Enjoy learning with all of your children through stories, songs and other literature-based activities in this 30-minute program. Family Story Times are scheduled from 11 to 11:30 a.m. on Nov. 19.

Games at St. Stephen St. Stephen Lutheran Church, 424 N. Third Ave., Edgar, will host board and card games in the church basement on Wednesday, Nov. 13, from 1 to 3 p.m. Refreshments and snacks will be served. Stuffed Animal Sleepover

Kids are invited to bring their stuffed animals to the Edgar Branch Library for a stuffed animal sleepover from Nov. 11 to 12. The stuffed friends will spend the night at the library (probably getting into some mischief) and photos of the sleepover festivities will be emailed to guardians. Stuffies can be dropped off between 1 and 6 p.m. on Nov. 11 and picked up the next day, Nov. 12, between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. The event is free, no registration required. Deer disposal dumpster The Central Wisconsin Conservation Club Inc., in conjunction with Marathon County Waste Management, will be sponsoring a dumpster for the disposal of deer carcass waste (rib cages, heads, legs and fat scrap) during the upcoming deer firearms season. The dumpster will be placed in the Edgar Waste Disposal entrance, located off of East Limits Road. There will also be a separate container placed there for unwanted deer hides, which will be donated to the Lions Camp for the Blind. The dumpster will be placed there on Nov. 22 thru Dec. 16.

This program is being done as a surrounding community service to help to keep our environment cleaner from improperly disposed waste in our rural ditches. People are asked to only use the dumpster for the waste that it is intended for so that this project can continue and grow in the future.

Book club The Edgar Book Club will meet on Tuesday, Nov. 12, at noon to discuss “The Golden Spoon” by Jessa Maxwell. During her annual televised baking competition on her Vermont estate, celebrated baker Betsy Martin, hailed as “America’s Grandmother,” finds murder in the mix when a body is discovered and everyone is a suspect. Computers basics

Adults are invited to a two-part series of computer basics class for beginners at the Edgar Branch Library on Monday, Nov. 18 and Monday, Nov. 25 from 1:30-3 p.m. In this session, we will cover some of the basics you need in order to get online and connect with friends and family. This class will help you become more comfortable and confident using technology. This event is free and open to the public. Space is limited so registration is required.
