Senior Card Group

The Senior Citizens card group met on Sept. 26 for weekly card playing at the Athens Area Fire and Ambulance Hall.

Two games of Sheepshead were played. David Perrodin won first place and Steve Klockziem came in second in the first game. Butch Boris won first and Wil Strack came in second in the second game.

Low score was Sally Stubbe. Newcomers are encouraged to come play Sheepshead every Thursday from 12:30-3:30 p.m. at the Athens fire hall.

Medicare 101

Adults are invited to the Athens Branch Library on Thursday, Oct. 3, from 5:30-6:30 p.m., for a free class on understanding the different parts of Medicare. Bettina Rinard, elder benefit specialist with the Aging and Disability Resource Center, will provide an overview of Medicare and help make sense of the parts, what they mean, and how to navigate them. Participants will look at defining Medicare Parts A, B, C, and D, when and how to sign up, and costs associated with coverage.

VFW Auxiliary 8527

The Sept. 24 meeting of VFW Auxiliary Post 8527 was called to order by president Ruth Weiler, with nine members present. Chaplain Cheryl Engel read the opening prayer, and the Pledge of Allegiance was said by all.

The secretary’s report was given and approved. Linda Adams read the General Orders. The treasurer’s report given and approved. Cheryl Engel gave the Sunshine Report.

Melanie Daniels made a motion and Marilyn Meyne seconded it to send a sympathy card to the Mary Brodzinski family. Motion carried.

Cheryl Engel made a motion, and it was seconded by Becky Knab to pay for the VFW newspaper for the members that who do not have a spouse in the VFW.

The receptacle for the distressed flags is now ready and was placed by Hardware Hank. It was donated by Wausau Tile. People are asked to place distressed flags in the receptacle instead of dropping them off at someone’s home.

The fall council of administration will be held on Nov. 16 at the Portage VFW.

An apple cake made by Karen Weiler was enjoyed by members.

The closing prayer was read by Cheryl Engel. The meeting adjourned.

The next meeting will be Oct. 22 at the Athens Fire and Ambulance back room.

Special prize was won by Becky Knab.

Mini Makers

Kids throughout Marathon County will have the opportunity to explore process art this fall. Process art is child-led and focuses on creation instead of following specific directions. Each branch will have a different project each month so that children and caregivers have an opportunity to unleash their creativity while meeting other community members.

The Athens Farmers Market is held every Tuesday, from 4 to 7 p.m., at Memorial Park.

Clay Creations

Kids and teens are invited to the Edgar Branch Library on Monday, Oct. 7, from 4-5 p.m., to create a little buddy out of air-dry clay, or make a foe in the form of a monster. Participants can take their little friend or foe home to dry or leave it at the library. Come back between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 11 to paint your creation. Lions dinner for seniors

The Edgar Lions Club will be sponsoring a complimentary chicken dinner for Edgar senior citizens on Thursday, Oct. 17. All meals will be in carry-out containers and should be picked up between 5 and 6 p.m. at the Edgar Fire Station. Wildlife Primer The Stratford Branch Library will host a Wildlife Primer for gardeners and other landowners on Tuesday, Oct. 8, from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Janell Wehr, horticulture educator from Marathon County Extension will teach participants how to apply the concepts of randomness and diversity in tackling wildlife damage. St. Andrew’s Feast

St. Andrew’s 32nd Annual Parish Pancake Feast, Bake Sale and Raffles will be held on Sunday, Oct. 13, from 9 a.m. to noon, at Neises Hall in Rozellville, 122726 CTH C. The all-you-can breakfast includes potato and buttermilk pancakes, sausages, applesauce, cheese, desserts, milk, juice and coffee. Preschool children eat for free, but there is a charge for older kids and adults. Matching funds are provided by the Catholic Order of Foresters.

High school play

Stratford High School will be performing Roald Dahl's “Matilda The Musical, Jr.” on Saturday, Oct. 19, at 7 p.m. and Sunday, Oct. 20, at 2 p.m. Tickets are sold at the door.
