Cross Country Team Defeats Rib lake

In the Tiger’s second dual cross country meet of the year, Stratford defeated Rib Lake 27-32. Stratford was led by sophomore runner Bill Kaiser. Kaiser’s time for the 3 mile run was an impressive 18:10 which established a new high school record.

Card Clubs

Mrs. Thelma Gammell was hostess to the Double Four bridge club at a noon luncheon. The prizes were awarded to Mrs. Walter Wallschlaeger, Mrs. Elizabeth Dickert and Mrs. Chas. Krause.

Mrs. Walter Ulrich was hostess to the Monday evening bridge club. Prizes went to Mrs. E.R. Brown, Mrs. Lil Kroeplin and Mrs. D. Hale.

New B/I park a go

The Village of Stratford has a business/industrial park that is almost full. Following the approval of the Joint Review Board, the village now has a second business/industrial park.

Patriotic art

The Ladies Auxiliary to Stratford Memorial Post 6352 sponsored the Creative Patriotic Art Contest. Julie Karl, daughter of Dale and Sue Karl, was the local winner as well as a first place winner at the state level. Her entry hangs in the VFW club house in Stratford. MARATHON JOURNAL

Rib Riders Snowmobile club

The Rib Riders Snowmobile club held their annual meeting. Election of officers were held and officers will be Lavern Seubert, president, Jerry Heindl, vice president, Dorothy Karlen, secretary and Joan Schneeberger, treasurer. The board of directors added Tony Gessler and Hank Lang.

University farm course scholarships

Cheryl Tolk, Athens, and Michael Kilty, Edgar, were among 64 Wisconsin young people to attend the University of Wisconsin- Madison Farm and Industry Short Course and received a scholarship grant.

Gymkhana Held

The Trail Trotters Club, their parents and horses gathered at Lake Allu for the first Trail Trotters Fun Day. High point rider was Jayne Klimpke. A potluck dinner was served.

Bow Hunters

Some of the successful bow hunters in the Edgar area have registered their deer at Krebsbach’s station. They are Mike Schueller, spiked buck; Linda Christensen, six-point buck; John Schulz, doe, and Gary Stencil, small buck.

Blessing of the animals

Father Bob Thorn flung sancramental water over a large assembly of cats, dogs and other pets during the annual blessing of the animals on the playground of St. Mary’s School, Marathon. In a prayer prior to the blessing, Father Bob called on students to remember St. Francis of Assisi.

Edgar trustees agree to updates

The Edgar Water and Sewer Committee voted to recommend proceeding with a $490,000 project to dewater and store sewer sludge. The sludge dewatering project will meet a long-known state DNR mandate that the village will be able to store 180 days of wastewater treatment plant sludge.

Profitable pumpkins

Dan Kamenick, Town of Marathon vegetable grower, is expecting to harvest 20,000 pumpkins this year grown with irrigation on seven acres. He will market most of his pumpkins on two big wagons by his driveway that faces CTH N.

1999 – United Way fundraiser

Stratford Lions member Dale Dooge dished up brats to a hungry crowd as part of the United Way Stratford Campaign kick off.

Community service

Athens High seniors Beth Hein and Jim Sodoma are pictured realigning gravestones in the Athens cemetery.

The pair are among 14 students in this year’s Craftman Class involved in cemetery work as a community service project under instructor Pat Kelley.
