Radio Club News

The Badgerland C.B. Radio club held its meeting at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Larry Tobin. The meeting was called to order by president Irene Boucher. All present agreed to assist the county emergency governemnt in its tornado warning as soon as they have it installed. Mr. and Mrs. Jim Hoover will host the next meeting.

In the Service

Marine PFC Larry A. Bores, a 1973 graduate of Stratford High School, participated in the evacuation of U.S. citizens and citizens of 14 other nations, from the Mediterranean island of Cyprus. The evacuees were further transported to safety at Beirut, Lebanon.

Lions Club to hold brat fries

The Stratford Lions Club will hold brat fries prior to the Homecoming football game against Spencer and the Parent’s Night football game against Athens. The profits from the games will go to scholarships. The Lions Club gave $2,000 in scholarships to the Class of 1998.

Homecoming celebration this weekend

Homecoming court members for this year are: Andrew Chrouser and Kristin Koontz, Andy Weigel and Tara Fisher, Shawn Kirsch and Candi Leick, Craig Moeller and Cindi Kolb, Craig Kann and Shannon Heeg, Jordan Newmeier and Stacey Werner, and Jonathan Schweiger and Brianna McGuire. The king and queen will be announced at the pep rally Friday prior to the parade. MARATHON JOURNAL

Bottle Drive

The Marathon FHA members will sponsor a bottle drive. The members will collect empty pop bottles and turn them in for a deposit. Proceeds will be donated.

Athens Woman’s Club

At the business meeting, members voted to continue sponsoring the scholarship and art show for this year. They will discontinue the community Halloween party because of their present small membership.

Chosen to Attend

Ann Miller, a senior at Edgar High School, has been selected to attend the Midwest convention of the March of Dimes in Omaha, Neb. Miller is a member of the Edgar FBLA which is very active in supporting the March of Dimes program.

Bear Harvest is Behind Last Year

The statewide bear harvest is underway and registrations are running about 35% behind last year’s tally. There were 1,106 bears registered at this time in 1998 and 719 in 1999. The statewide estimated bear population is about 13,750 bear.

Foreign Exchange Students

Athens High School has two foreign exchange students this school year. One is Daniela Ramos, a native of Brazil, who is staying with Robert and Mary Burish. A second foreign exchange student is Davide Corradini, a resident of Italy. He is staying with Tom and Betsy Weiler.

Silent Reading

Sustained silent reading will again be scheduled twice each month for Edgar Elementary and Middle School students. Students will be asked to use certain reading strategies during each silent 20 minute reading session.

County board: “no” to power line

The Marathon County Board of Supervisors heard both sides but voted, like six other Wisconsin county boards, to oppose a proposed 345 kilovolt power transmission line between Weston and Duluth. County board members echoed public concern about the powerline with a lopsided vote.

1999 – Championship Team

Jansen Builders took the Marathon Boys Minor League Championship during the 1999 softball season with a record of 9-0-1. The boys are coached by Brian Carr and Larry Heindl and the team sponsor is Wally Jansen. THE RECORD-REVIEW ARCHIVES

1999 – Greater Athens Open

The Athens Jaycees Greater Athens Open was held at the Medford Tee Hi golf course with 52 golfers participating. Taking first place in the top flight was Robbie Gilles, center, with a record score of 64. Mitch Marohl, right, placed first in the second flight and Bill Coker, left, won the third flight.
