Senior Card Group

The Senior Citizens card group met on Sept. 4 for weekly card playing at the Athens Area Fire and Ambulance Hall. Two games of Sheepshead were played. Butch Boris won first place and Wil Strack came in second in the first game. David Perrodin won first and Andy Hoeft came in second in the second game.

Low score was Pat Frank. Newcomers are encouraged to come play Sheepshead every Thursday from 12:30-3:30 p.m. at the Athens fire hall.

Dinner and a Concert

Friday Night Dinner by the Gazebo for Sept. 6 will hosted by Santa’s Workshop. The meal will include “Macho Nachos,” soft shell tacos, water and strawberry shortcake. Serving will start at 5:30 p.m. and go until 9 p.m. The Old Timers Band will perform at 7:30 p.m. In the event of rain, dinner and concert will be held under the shelter in Memorial Park.

Family Story Time

Children of all ages and their parents or caregivers are invited to visit the Athens Branch Library for Family Story Time. For 30 minutes, library staff will read books, sing songs, and offer other literaturebased activities. Upcoming story times are scheduled for Wednesdays, Sept. 11 and 18, from 10:30 to 11 a.m. and on Wednesday, Sept. 25, from 10 to 11 a.m.

Farmers Market

The Athens Farmers Market is held every Tuesday, from 4 to 7 p.m., at Memorial Park.

Social Security basics

Adults are invited to a class on getting ready for retirement and navigating Social Security benefits on Thursday, Sept. 19, from 5:306:30 p.m., at the Athens Branch Library. Bettina Rinard, elder benefit specialist with the Aging and Disability Resource Center, will provide answers and help you gather the information you need to make the best choice for you. She will also discuss less commonly known benefits like family benefits, survivor’s benefits, and ex-spousal benefits.

Needlework Social Hour

Adults are invited to craft and chat at a Needlework Social Hour on Monday, Sept. 23, from 4-6 p.m. at the Edgar Branch Library. Whether it’s knitting, crocheting, embroidery or mending, everyone is welcome to bring their projects and chat. Future sessions are planned for Oct. 28, Nov. 25, and Dec. 23. The event is free. Bingo at St. Stephen

Plant swap

Plant lovers can swap the old for the new during a free Plant Swap event from Sept. 16-21 at the Marathon City Branch Library. Patrons can take or leave a plant, along with care instructions if they’d be helpful. A table will be set up right outside the library all week during regular business hours. Class of 1964 reunion

The Marathon High School Class of 1964 is holding a 60th reunion with a social and luncheon on Wednesday, Oct. 9, at Marathon Lanes, 1200 STH 107, Marathon City. Family history lessons

Adults can learn how to trace their family history using Ancestry on Thursday, Sept. 19, from 5:30-7 p.m. at the Stratford Branch Library. Library staff will guide participants through some of the basics of genealogical research before covering some of the basics of Ancestry, which can be accessed at no charge to library patrons. Patrons will also complete a basic family tree chart and begin working on family info sheets.

The Stratford Book Club will meet at the local branch library at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 18, to discuss “Lady Tan’s Circle of Women” by Lisa See. Sent into an arranged marriage and forbidden to continue her work as a midwifein- training, Yunxian is ordered to act like a proper wife and seeks a way to continue treating women and girls from every level of society in 15th century China. ‘Voices From the Past’

The Marathon County Historical Society presents its annual “Voices from the Past: A Historical Walk through Pine Grove Cemetery” on Sunday, Sept. 22,, at Pine Grove Cemetery, 1501 Grand Ave., in Wausau. The first tour leaves at 11 a.m., and the last tour begins at 2 p.m.

During a guided tour through the historic cemetery, costumed renactors will tell stories from Marathon County’s past. The event will highlight business owners, a musician, a military officer, and several others that made Wausau the strong community that it was then and has become.
