Lions Bulb Sale

The Lions club of Stratford will again hold a light bulb sale on Saturday. They will sell in the country in the morning and in the village in the afternoon. They will have a good assortment of bulbs. The proceeds will go to the Lions camp for the blind at Rosholt.

Two Stratford homes sustain damage from fire

The STH 97 and Larch Street corner house, owned by Duane Bohman, sustained fire, smoke and water damage. Something in or near the clothes dryer caught fire. One person was rescued by firefighters through an upstairs window.

The Doll family residence at C4338 STH 97 also had a fire which was believed to have started in an upstairs bedroom closet. Three bedrooms were destroyed with the kitchen and dining room ruined by smoke and water damage.

Zion Lutheran celebrates 100 years

On Sunday, September 12, at Zion Luthern Church, Stratford, a Festival Service was held to celebrate 100 years of ministry. Bishop Robert Berg of Rice Lake joined ELCA Pastor Sue Eidahl, Stratford, for the service.

Large Crowd Attend Fun Days Festivities

The fourteenth annual Marathon Fun Days, sponsored by the American Legion Post 469 were very well attended. It was estimated that the parade attracted 8,000 people. Miss Joan Seehafer, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Seehafer, reigned as Fun Days queen.

Edgar Board of Education Met

At the recent Edgar board meeting, the superintendent presented a school opening report to the board with figures showing the high school with 347 students and the elementary with 511. He also reported that there would be a vacancy on the secretarial staff later this fall and applicants would be sought for the position.

AHS Band Leaders

Two new flag twirlers and a majorette were chosen by the senior band members at Athens High School last week. The new flag twirlers are Lynn Punke and Tammi Blake and Diane Drewek was chosen as majorette. They join Tammi Weise as a majorette and Jayne Klimpke as drum majorette.

Athens school board hires new principal

The Athens Board of Education offered a one year contract to Larry Fildes, Withee, for $55,000 a year. Fildes is currently a special education teacher in the Flambeau School District in Tony.

Edgar plans to rebid subdivision project A bid for developing Clearview Subdivision in Edgar turned up significantly over estimate and the project has been delayed. The subdivision is being created by Gerald and Margaret Heil but the Village of Edgar will contract the development and help finance the improvements.

Punt, Pass and Kick

There were 52 participants in this year’s Marathon area Punt, Pass and Kick competition. The following children will advance to sectional competition: Lesley Artus, Brittany Zelenka, Brittany Seubert, Tyler Hamann, Wade Paul, Brian Kaldunski and Nathan Thomsen.

1974 –

Homecoming court

Queen Patti Braun and King Matt Viegut reigned over homecoming activities Friday at Athens. They were crowned by the 1973 king and queen Lynette Drewek and Rick Ewan. The homecoming dance on Friday night climaxed a week of activities.
