Senior Card Group

The Senior Citizens card group met on Aug. 29 for weekly card playing at the Athens Area Fire and Ambulance Hall.

Three games of Sheepshead were played. Steve Klockziem won first place and Butch Boris came in second in the first game. Tom Ellenbecker won first and Wil Strack came in second in the second game. Norbert Lake came in first and Henry Faber came in second in the third game.

Low score was Rick Schaetzl. Newcomers are encouraged to come play Sheepshead every Thursday from 12:30-3:30 p.m. at the Athens fire hall.

Dinner and a Concert

Friday Night Dinner by the Gazebo for Sept. 6 will hosted by Santa’s Workshop. The meal will include “Macho Nachos,” soft shell tacos, water and strawberry shortcake. Serving will start at 5:30 p.m and go until 9 p.m. The Old Timers Band will perform at 7:30 p.m. In the event of rain, dinner and concert will be held under the shelter in Memorial Park.

Book Club

The Athens Book Club will meet at the local branch library at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 10, to discuss “Tom Lake” by Ann Patchett. Recalling the past at her daughters’ request, Lara tells the story of a famous actor with whom she shared both a stage and a romance, causing her daughters to examine their own lives and reconsider everything they thought they knew. Family Story Time

Children of all ages and their parents or caregivers are invited to visit the Athens Branch Library for Family Story Time. For 30 minutes, library staff will read books, sing songs, and offer other literature- based activities. Upcoming story times are scheduled for Wednesdays, Sept. 11 and 18, from 10:30 to 11 a.m. and on Wednesday, Sept. 25, from 10 to 11 a.m.

VFW Auxiliary 8527

The latest meeting of the VFW Auxiliary Post 8527 was called to order by president Ruth Weiler in the back room of the Athens Area Fire Department, with 10 members present.

The guest speaker was Jennifer Mauritz, the district senior vice president, who was there for the annual post inspection.

The secretary’s report was given and approved, and Linda Adams read the general orders for September. The treasurer’s report was given and approved.

The bills were presented and approved. Karen Weiler made a motion to approve buying Patriot Pencils for children. The motion was seconded by Gloria Lavicka. Motion carried.

The Sunshine Report was given. No cards were sent this month.

September is National Suicide Prevention Month. The VFW Auxiliary participates to raise awareness.

Gloria Lavicka and Denise Sikorski will be going to the middle and high school to talk about the Voice of Democracy for ninth through 12th graders. The theme for this year is “Is America today our forefathers’ vision?”

The Patriot Pen essay is for sixth through eighth grade. Their theme is “My voice in American democracy.” The deadline for submitting essays is Oct. 31.

The national president, Brenda Bryant, will be be visiting Wisconsin on Oct. 9-11.

The post’s district meeting will be held Oct. 12 in Wausau. Those who would like to attend are asked to talk to Ruth Weiler.

In old business, the post’s flag retirement date is Sept. 15, with a 3 p.m. ceremony to be held at Memorial Park in Athens.

Cheryl Engel made a motion to pay the dues of any members 90 and over. Ceil Johnson seconded it. Motion carried.

Thank-you letters were were received and read from scholarship winners Addison Lavicka and Katlin Osborne. A thank-you letter also came from the family of Bitsy Ewan for a memorial.

Jennifer Mauritz awarded Cheryl Engel a Certification of Recognition for her special service to the auxiliary post. She will also be nominated for the Jeanette Frank Continuous Service Award.

A motion was made by Gayle Mauer and seconded by Cheryl Engel to allow the use of volunteer hours for the outreach program. Motion carried.

A motion was made by Marilyn Meyn and seconded by Karen Weiler to allow members to use volunteer hours for funerals in the outreach program. Motion carried.

The closing prayer was read by chaplain Cheryl Engel.

The meeting was adjourned. The post’s next meeting will be Tuesday, Sept. 24.

The Athens Farmers Market is held every Tuesday, from 4 to 7 p.m., at Memorial Park.

Annual golf outing

The Marathon Athletic Club will hold its 6th annual golf outing and social on Saturday, Sept. 7. The social event starts at 5 p.m. at the Marathon Sports Center. Multiple raffles will be set up to support all athletic programs in Marathon. Tickets can be purchased at the Sports Center before the social begins, and participants need not be present to win. Raffle prizes will be announced at 8 p.m.
