Small Turnout By Voters on Tuesday

The fall primary elections are undoubtedly necessary, but they are almost a farse because of the poor turn-out in Stratford. Only 99 citizens took time to vote in the primary here. There were 57 Democratic votes, 33 Republican votes and 9 American party votes.

Talks to Continue on New Sub-Station

A very constructive meeting was held at the Stratford village hall on Monday evening concerning the building of a new sub-station in Stratford. The tentative plans would put the new sub-station near the high school athletic field.

A& B plans for future

Commitment and passion brought A& B Process Systems to where it is today, said A& B President Glenn Linzmeier. The ceremonial groundbreaking for a new 6,400 sq. ft. addition happened on Wednesday. The office expansion will include 28 offices as well as a larger cafeteria, meeting rooms and storage space. MARATHON JOURNAL

Elect Officers for GAA

Jean Volhard was elected president, Karen Peterson vice president and Debra Oelke secretary/ treasurer of the Marathon high school girls athletic association at a meeting last week. It is the group’s aim to have dances, bake sales and other school related activities to get funds for projects planned.

Primary News

The American party fared pretty badly in Marathon in Tuesday’s election, with only two voters showing preference for that group. This is in spite of forecasts that the American people are getting pretty fed up with the present two-party system and that the country is ripe for a third party.

Dawn Riske named exchange student

Athens High School will send its first foreign exchange student, Dawn Riske, to Mexico City. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Riske, Route 3. She will be living and attending school in Mexico City for the next three months.

Horse disappears from farm

Brandy, a 13-year-old black mare, vanished from her rural Athens farm pasture Thursday without a trace. The horse belongs to Jack and Katie Soderberg, Route 2, Athens. She was wearing a red halter when she disappeared.

Edgar Lions hold annual corn roast

Edgar Lions held its annual fall corn roast meeting at the Edgar Village Park. Guests of the evening were the new teachers of the Edgar High School and their spouses. A short meeting was led by president Marvin Radue and secretary Rudy Meyer.

25 YEARS AGO...

WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 8, 1999

American Odyssey race slated

The 26.2 kilometer race will start at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday at Marathon High School and finish at the Athens Village Square. Joel Braatz, longtime organizer, expects between 50 to 60 marathoners with members of 15 or so racing teams to compete.

ConAgra taxes unpaid

ConAgra Fresh meats, owes the Village of Edgar nearly $6,500 in unpaid personal property taxes from the 1998-99 tax year. Village administrator Dennis Weix told the board that there is no practical way to recover the unpaid taxes.

VFW meeting

The Athens Veterans of Foreign Wars Andrew Sutter Post met in the Athens Fire Hall. Commander Marvin Reuter passed out photographs of the recently placed Legacy Stone at the High Ground Memorial in Neillsville.

1999 – Her highness

Gail Keene, a senior at Marathon High School, was crowned Marathon Fun Days queen on Friday night.
