A thens Senior Card Group

The Senior Citizens card group met on May 30 for weekly card playing at the Athens Area Fire and Ambulance Hall.

Three games of Sheepshead were played. Aaron Totzke won first place and Norbert Lake came in second in the first game. Henry Faber won first and Steve Klockziem came in second in the second game. Sally Stubbe won first in the third game, with Alvira Henrichs coming in second.

Low score was Dave Perrodin. Newcomers are encouraged to come play Sheepshead every Thursday from 12:30-3:30 p.m. at the Athens fire hall.

Pizza Box Solar Oven

Participants will use a plain pizza box to make their own working solar oven! Participants will receive a complimentary s’mores kit to test out their oven. Join us anytime during regular business hours the week of June 17-22 at the Marathon County Public Library’s Athens Branch (203 Alfred St., Athens). All supplies are provided free of charge. Family Story Time

Children ages six and under and their parents and caregivers are invited to come to the Athens Branch Library during the summer months on the first and third Monday of the month for Family Story Time. During this 30-minute program, participants will read books together, sing some songs, learn the ABCs, and have an alphabet coloring page available afterwards. The next Story Time will be Monday, June 17, from 10:30–11 a.m.

The award is presented to students who have a grade point average of 3.5 or above.

Athens VFW

The monthly meeting of Athens VFW Post 8527 was held June 5. The Pledge of Allegiance was said by the 15 members in attendance.

Guests in attendance were Tami Schreiber (Athens Lions) and Cheryl Engel (VFW Auxiliary) A $300 donation was made to the Athens Lions for the fireworks at this year’s 4th of July celebration.

A $75 donation was also made to the Athens Fire Department towards their annual golf outing.

Cheryl Engel was a guest from the VFW auxiliary reporting on upcoming events and proposals of which Post 8527 may be interested in assisting with.

Attendance door prizes were given to Rick Schaetzl, Mike Seliger, and Galen Schreiber.

The next monthly meeting will be held on Wednesday, July 3, at 7 p.m. at the fire hall back room. New members are always welcome.

Farmers Market

The Athens Farmers Market is held every Tuesday, from 4 to 7 p.m., at Memorial Park.

E dgar Lukasko birth

A daughter, Lyla Bea, was born to Tiffany and Andrew Lukasko, Edgar, on May 29, 2024, at Aspirus Wausau Hospital. She weighed seven pounds and was 21 inches long at birth.

Farmers Market

Starting June 20, the Marathon City Farmers Market will be open from 2 to 6 p.m. every Thursday at 400 Main St. More than 45 vendors will be selling produce, bakery items, flowers, arts and craft. Marathon

C ounty Tom Pease concerts

Beloved children’s performer Tom Pease will perform a variety of his catchy tunes during two free concerts on Tuesday, June 18. The concerts will be held from 10 to 11 a.m. at Marathon Elementary in Marathon City and from 1:30-2:30 p.m. at Oak Street Park in Edgar. Presented by the Marathon County Public Library, the concerts are free and no registration is required.
