The Athens Board of Education on July 17 approved for the school district to hire Skyward of Stevens Point to replace Alio for its computer financial software.

Athens School District will pay Skyward an initial investment of $11,596. The implementation services are $59,200, 12-month recurring fee is $3,190 and the SCC Hosting, which is a secure data hosting infrastructure, is $3,000.

Andrea Sheridan, Athens schools superintendent, and the school board realize it appears like the school district is spending a lot of money to contract with Skyward but they believe the school district will recoup much of its cost over the span of the three-year contract.

“Purchasing this district software system is an excellent long-term investment for the School District of Athens which will benefit all employees,” Sheridan said.

The school board chose the lowest bid of $29,104.80 from Bluum of Minnesota to provide approximately 120 new Chromebooks for three grades of students. Athens School District buys Chromebooks each year for three grades of students. Sheridan will let Nathan Brost, school district technology coordinator, decide if the school district can sell the old Chromebooks that are being replaced.

School board members approved the school district’s human resources report that consists of Athens School District hiring Dana Blume as a fulltime second grade teacher at Maple Grove Charter School in Hamburg, hiring Brian Popp as a full-time concessions coordinator and accepting the resignation of Curtis Hanson as Athens middle/high school band teacher. Sheridan said Hanson has taken a new job as a band teacher in the Wausau School District. The school board also approved the school district’s hiring of Adam Ellenbecker and Shawn Steinke as Athens varsity assistant football coaches, Darion Ellenbecker as middle school football coach, Kathy Luther and Jessica Bingham as varsity assistant volleyball coaches, Mandy Ellenbecker as middle school volleyball coach and Karla Erickson as middle school cross country coach. The school district is still looking to hire another varsity assistant football coach.

Athens School Board approved the school districts academic standards without any modifications, for the 2023-24 school year.

The school board will let Sheridan discuss with the other Marawood Conference superintendents about what the best option is for selling tickets at sporting events. The conference might decide to strictly implement the Go-Fan event cell phone app which would allow fans to purchase tickets online, or allow a combination of the GoFan app while still letting fans pay cash for tickets at the door.

Athens School Board meetings now start an hour earlier at 5 p.m. on the third Monday of each month in the middle/high school library.
