Alumni Award
The Athens School District has developed an annual award to be given to between one and six Athens distinguished alumni. The purpose is to provide inspirational role models for students through the recognition of Athens graduates while promoting a legacy of community pride. Graduates may be alive or presented posthumously.
Nominations for the award are due to the Athens High School office by March 24. They may be mailed to Athens HS Distinguished Alumni Award, PO Box F, Athens, WI 54411. Forms may be picked up at the high school office or found on the district’s website.

Progress Athens
Were you waiting for the perfect timing? Make every dollar of your Progress Athens donations more valuable and work even harder now. Due to a recent positive development for the Progress Athens initiative, we are excited to announce that we are closer to our fundraising goal and bringing our visions to fruition. There is an anonymous donor willing to match any donations up to $40,000 and the Village of Athens has graciously offered to match any donations up to $50,000 made between now and March 31, 2023. Say you donate $1,000, the village would match $1,000 and the anonymous donor would also donate $1,000. We need your help now.
The initiative was started in 2021 to raise $400,000 for the purpose to both purchase the old bank building, of which that initial step is the leading step to then complete the second piece of the project, such as the renovations of the Athens Community Hall. Funds raised to date are $352,222.82 of the $400,000 goal.
Donations can be earmarked for the old bank building or the community hall project if you wish and can be sent to Progress Athens, PO Box 147, Athens, WI 54411. Follow Progress Athens on Facebook and via the Village of Athens website.

Meeting Program Peter Barbello, Athens, spoke of his 17 years teaching on the U.S. military base Republic of Marshall Islands. There are only two islands where one can earn a paycheck to make a living: Kwajalein and Ebeye. Population is 50,000-60,000. Marshall Islands are located in the Central Pacific, 2,500 miles from Hawaii. Following nuclear testing by the US, horrific effects resulted. Natives in the Marshall Islands possess high skills in navigation, fishing, weaving, wood carving. Written language is in flux and poverty is a huge challenge with many living in shipping compartments. Training in sanitation and health care is lacking. Despite these challenges, residents are resilient and joyful. Normal amount of rainfall is 100 inches from Sept. to Dec. Questions and answers concluded Barbello’s presentation.
