6 NGL wrestlers advance to sectionals

The Neillsville-Greenwood-Loyal (NGL) boys wrestling team competed at the WIAA Division 2 Regional CI at Richland Center Saturday, with five wrestlers placing in the top four in their weight classes to advance to individual sectionals: Hudzon Sebesta-Opelt (first), Jake Luchterhand (first), Jackson Meyer (first), Rydge Tibbett (fourth), and Chase Lindner (fourth). Several others were only one to two places off from making it to sectionals, and all of them will be back next year to compete. Sectionals will be held this Saturday, Feb. 22, in Wisconsin Dells, with the top three finishers at sectionals moving on to the state tournament, which begins Feb. 27 at UW-Madison.

On the girls side, Brynn Heck won her weight bracket at the girls regional in Wautoma Friday and is moving on to girls sectionals which will be this Friday at Eau Claire North.

The NGL boys placed fourth as a team with 159 points. The top two teams advance to team sectionals. Winning the tournament was Gale-Ettrick-Trempealeau/Melrose-Mindoro with 275 points. Lodi was second with 228.5 points and Mauston/Necedah took third with 182.5 points.

Complete results are as follows, listed by weight class: BOYS 106 Boden Opelt (25-16) placed fifth and scored 13 team points.

Championship Round 1 - Opelt received a bye.

Quarterfinal - Colton Buechner (Wautoma/Wild Rose) 28-16 won by major decision over Opelt (13-1).

Consolation Round 2 - Opelt received a bye.

Consolation Semi - Opelt received a bye. Fifth-Place Match - Opelt won by fall over Jaden Page (Gale-Ettrick-Trempealeau/ Melrose-Mindoro, or GET/MM) 19-24 (fall 0:53).

Fourth-Place Match - Colton Buechner (Wautoma/Wild Rose) 28-16 won by no contest over Opelt.

113 Mason Anding (20-16) did not place.

Quarterfinal - Kaiden Stibbe (Richland Center) 27-19 won by decision over Anding (8-1).

Consolation Round 2 - Anding received a bye.

Consolation Semifinal - Jack Wiseman (Adams-Friendship) 14-23 won by fall over Anding (fall 3:51).

120 Rydge Tibbett (26-14) placed fourth and scored 14 team points.

Championship Round 1 - Tibbett received a bye.

Quarterfinal - Tibbett won by major decision over Jayden Vanderhoof (Mauston/Necedah) 31-8 (MD 12-1).

Semifinal - Ethan Hady (Richland Center) 42-7 won by fall over Tibbett (fall 3:03).

Third-Place Match - Bryer Caves (Lodi) 38-13 won by technical fall over Tibbett (TF-1.5 5:41 (15-0)).

Fourth-Place Match - Tibbett won by no contest over Jayden Vanderhoof (Mauston/Necedah) 31-8.

126 Chase Lindner (32-20) placed fourth and scored 19.5 team points.

Championship Round 1 - Lindner won by fall over Brock Barrett (Richland Center) 20-18 (fall 1:05).

Quarterfinal - Kashton Stoddard (Wisconsin Dells) 32-13 won by fall over Lindner (fall 1:04).

Consolation Round 2 - Lindner won by fall over Ricardo Anaya (Wautoma/Wild Rose) 20-20 (fall 1:37).

Fifth Place Match -Lindner won by major decision over Barrett (18-5).
