UW-Stevens Point at Marshfield is thrilled to present “Godspell” Jan. 31, Feb. 1, and Feb. 6-8 at 7:30 p.m., with a matinee on Feb. 2 at 2 p.m. at the Helen Connor Laird Theatre.
“Under the skilled direction of Donna Thompson, this updated version of “Godspell” is a masterful retelling of the original sensation, injected with contemporary references and dazzling new arrangements,” Rebecca Bauer of UWSP wrote in a press release.
“In the show, a small group of people help Jesus Christ tell different parables by using a wide variety of games, storytelling techniques, and a hefty dose of comic timing. An eclectic blend of songs, ranging in style from pop to vaudeville, is employed as the story of Jesus’ life dances across the stage. Dissolving hauntingly into the Last Supper and the crucifixion, Jesus’ messages of kindness, tolerance and love come vibrantly to life.”
Godspell was the first major musical theatre offering from three-time Grammy and Academy Award winner, Stephen Schwartz (“Wicked,” “Pippin,” “Children of Eden”); and it took the world by storm. Led by the international hit, “Day by Day,” “Godspell” features a parade of beloved songs, including “Prepare Ye the Way of the Lord,” “Learn Your Lessons Well,” “All for the Best,” “All Good Gifts,” “Turn Back, O Man” and “By My Side.”
The production features a talented cast, including Amy and Lexi Schultz, and Joe Anderson, all from Loyal and all playing followers of Jesus. Other roles are: Brian Clark as Jesus, Nat Bremer as John the Baptist/Judas and followers of Jesus: Joelle Clark, Alanna Feddick, Lisa Frey, Kris Hughes, Kristina Kaiser, Abby Peterson, Andy Peterson, Courtney Posteluk, Steve Schmidt, Montana Smith-Frome, and Andy Wuethrich.
“Don’t miss this opportunity to experience ‘Godspell’—a vibrant and heartfelt production that will inspire and uplift audiences of all ages!” Bauer wrote.
This production is sponsored by the Laird Fund for the Arts. Tickets can be purchased at tickets.uwsp.edu.
