Granton does a lot involving the young elementary students. So far this year we have put together a forest education night themed “Surviving In the Wilderness.” FFA members spent the day teaching kids about the importance of first aid and how to perform it, certain characteristics of wild animals, and how to be prepared for an encounter with them. We also taught how to build a proper shelter, knot tying, and common edible plants as well as plants to stay away from.

Granton FFA also held a bike rodeo for the second-, third-, and fourth-graders this year. The students were taught proper bike safety such as where and when to ride their bikes, checking on their bikes’ upkeep, hand signals, and were even given the opportunity to ride a bike on a course in the school parking lot, where they were able to demonstrate the skills they learned.

Personally, I teach each elementary class about different aspects of agriculture. I have given lessons on pumpkin growing and its origins for Halloween, FFA and the leadership that goes hand in hand with it, agriculture careers where we took a look at their personality and matched it to a career cluster, and the importance of a balanced diet looking at My Plate and helping them to understand the importance of eating healthy and staying active.

The experiences I have gotten from this have been amazing. Each student brings me new challenges to overcome and another person to teach about the importance of agriculture in their everyday lives, whether you see it or do not.
