Granton FFA gives out lessons and helmets to young bicyclists
This year the FFA hosted a bike rodeo for secondthrough fourth-graders. They got a classroom lecture about being safe on bikes and learned the proper hand signals while riding a bike.
Thanks to a donation from Security Health Plan and Marshfield Clinic Health System, as well as a donation from our FFA chapter, we were able to purchase bicycle helmets for every student grades 2-4. This ensures that every Granton bike rider will now be able to ride their bikes safely without the risk of a head injury!
After the classroom portion of the lesson, the kids took turns riding their bikes through the marked course. Students were invited to bring in their own bikes, but we also had ones available to borrow. FFA members fitted each of the students with a helmet and also adjusted the bicycles to the right height for each rider.
Before the elementary got on their bikes there was a quick review on what they learned and a touch-up on hand signals and they were given helmets and fit to their heads. They also had to check to make sure they had no laces or loose clothing that could catch in the chain of their bikes.
The riding course encouraged students to properly use their hand signals such as turning, stopping, and yielding. One of the coolest parts of the day was watching a few students ride a bike for the very first time! FFA members were there to help keep the student steady, but it was still a very inspiring thing to see.
It is really important to teach kids the importance of bike safety and the FFA wanted to make sure the kids in our community are safe!
