The Granton FFA Chapter is very involved in the Granton Fall Festival. They provide children’s games on Saturday, the day before the parade.

The Chapter’s day starts at 10 am with the fishing contest held at the Granton Community Park. They hand out prizes for the biggest fish, the smallest fish, and the most fish caught. The winners get cash prizes. The FFA members’ job is to measure the fish and hand out prizes.

Next, they have the penny scramble, which starts at 1 p.m. The kids are separated into age groups and dig through the sawdust to find pennies, quarters, nickels, dimes, and marbles. If they find a marble they can give it to an FFA member to receive an extra special prize. The job of the FFA members is to sweep the sawdust into a line and sprinkle the money into it.

After the penny scramble, they have the frog jump contest. Kids bring their frogs to see whose frog jumps the farthest. FFA members measure how far the frogs jump, catch the frogs when they have finished jumping, and hand out prizes. The children can either take their frogs home or they are placed in a box to be released at the park after the contest is over. Each participant receives 50 cents and cash prizes are handed out to the three children whose frogs jumped the farthest.

After the frog jump, they have the pedal pull. The kids are split into classes according to their weight. During each class, the kids pull a tractor attached to a wagon with weights in it. The top three pullers in each class win a trophy. The FFA members set up the course, measure how far each kid pulls, and hand out the prizes.

Running the games is only part of the FFA members’ job. Making kids smile and have fun is the most important part for everyone.

Loyal FFA and Lions Club team up at Christmas time

The Loyal Lions and Loyal FFA joined forces to make the holidays a little sweeter for elder community members. Fruit baskets were packed by members from both groups using fruit from the FFA’s annual fundraiser. Over 130 baskets were delivered to elderly who live in the Loyal area, as well as those in assisted living. Community service projects are some of our favorite activities throughout the year. A few other community projects the Loyal FFA is involved in are: farmer appreciation donut deliveries, teacher appreciation breakfast, presenting at the Veterans Day program, and highway cleanup. -- Elizabeth Troutt, Loyal FFA President
