Battle of the Border Blood Drives
To the Editor: Recently, Colby and Abbotsford High Schools participated in a little friendly “off the field” competition by hosting separate blood drives at their schools, with the winner of this competition determined by who had collected the most total blood units at their drive. Although Colby won the honor of displaying the lifesaver plaque for a year, I am incredibly proud of both schools and this community, in general, who seem to single handedly provide a large portion of the area’s expected blood supply. This is truly thanks to many compassionate people within these communities, who personally understand the impact of blood donations, particularly the Kremsreiter family, who set a crucial precedence in blood collections within this area. I just wanted to say thank you to anyone who has or continues to donate blood, as it is a truly lifesaving product that cannot be manufactured or reproduced and completely relies on the generosity of the healthy to impact the sick. Versiti Blood Center of Wisconsin has scheduled blood drives in the Colby/ Abbotsford area every eight weeks, with the Grant Smazal Memorial drive coming up on January 17 and 18 at the Colby Middle School. I urge anyone that has not donated blood to make the attempt. It does not cost anything and only takes one hour of your time, but it could mean everything to the patient that receives it. To schedule an appointment to donate blood, please visit versiti. org or call 877-232-4376.
