Mummy wrapping
“Tis the day before Halloween and in the wee hours of the morning, outside was a windy and blustery warm mess. Nary a soul awake and the town streets desolate. All but myself and Koda out in the moonlight.
Now, hours later my watch reads at 5:30 a.m., that it is already 66º F. Did I miss something? Am I actually in Florida? It is the day before Halloween in Wisconsin right?
I could be a little bit on the delirious side of things today as lack of sleep is evident in my eyes and body language. You see, one would not normally be up all hours of the night traipsing around outside as well, but my furbabe Koda has a bit of an ouchy on his paw. So as today ticks on, the more zombielike I get. All except the eating brains thing and wanting to literally bite everyone in sight, and I do move quite fast for an “undead” person but even at 6:20 a.m. I am already slowing down.
More importantly, in my brain of things is that Koda, once very restless, is fast asleep. He is not licking the bandage around his hind leg/ foot anymore and even though he doesn’t seem to like it, it must remain so as to heal.
What happened to my beloved pupperoni, you ask? Well to answer, I don’t exactly know. Sunday evening, I was carving my pumpkin while watching some good ‘ole Halloween classic movies, when I noticed Koda licking his back paw a lot. With getting his attention away from his paw, I was able to get it into my view and I saw red. My mind immediately asked, “blood?” Within seconds I was at his side inspecting his paw, getting a closer look.
Between his third and fourth digit was, what looked to be an abscess and it was in fact bleeding a bit. I grabbed some hot water and a paper towel to clean it up. I found some gauze and wrap and did just that. Wrapped up his paw and gave him a hemp treat to help calm the inflammation and to help him sleep a little.
The next morning arose and checking on him was my first priority. While he was outside his dressing flung off, or he used the ground to his advantage and was able to use force to shuck it off. So, when he came back in, I cleaned and dressed it again. I called the vet and on Monday he was able to get in.
We weren’t able to find much other than there was a puncture wound and a super inflamed pad and toe for the Koda-meister. Onto antibiotics and some pain meds but with his restlessness this past evening and the wound area not looking much better, it might be time to perhaps look further into his paw. I was hoping we wouldn’t have to sedate him to have the vet look at it but he needs to heal properly.
One of the scariest things is to have someone you love so dearly and have a language barrier between you so then you aren’t able to fully understand what needs to be done. Can he feel something in there? If only I spoke dog language. So, zombie like and filled with worry and lack of sleep I bid you adieu. Happy Halloween.
