LETTER TO THE EDITOR
The carboard signs of war
To the editor: This is in response to Ron Gutenberger’s letter to the editor a few weeks back. I am “the neighbor” that is involved in the ongoing sign war with Ron.
The first thing Ron talked about in his letter was the first amendment. I too, am a big supporter of the first amendment, but I’m also a supporter of something that I wish was an amendment to our constitution, and that is to treat your neighbors with due respect and decency. What I’m referring to here, is the fact that Ron initiated this sign war, when he chose to put his Harris political signs 2 inches from the edge of my lawn. I had a number of friends, neighbors and/or colleagues either contact me or comment in passing that they were very surprised to see that I was supporting Harris. The fact of the matter is, I’m not, but to anyone passing by, that was certainly the impression they got when Ron decided to put his sign on what is essentially the property line between his field and my lawn. He’s got 80 acres to work with, and I’m sure I’m not the only person in this community that would be frustrated with his sign placement. Supporting a candidate in a presidential election is a right you have as a citizen, but we found his sign placement inappropriate, as people passing by associated the Harris signs with us. Why not place your signs out in front of your house, Ron?
Next in Ron’s letter, he tells a long, exaggerated story of his encounter with the man on the four wheeler. I’m not going to get into great detail with that fiasco, other than to say I was a listening ear to a portion of that encounter, but there were others in the neighborhood who heard more of the exchange who have said that story is half sided, exaggerated, and a good part of it is fiction.
Truth be told, I’m not going to be thrilled with either election result. I’m certainly not a hard core “Trumper,” and we only placed the Trump signs in our yard to prove a point after Ron placed his on the property line. With that being said, I also can’t get on board with a political party that would be led by a candidate that refuses to answer relevant questions on, well, pretty much anything.
Now that the dust has settled, Ron has got his Harris/Walz signs, and I’ve got my Trump/ Vance signs up. I will give Ron some credit though regarding his set up, because he has a big, beautiful American flag displayed on top of his hay bales. Perhaps if all of us would focus on what that flag has stood for the past 200+ years, we would all be better off.
