The opposite ends of the spectrum The opposite ends of the spectrum

There was plenty going on this weekend. Could I be found at Abbotsford First City Days? No, I wasn’t there. The Clark County Fair ran all weekend, was I attending that? Nope, not there either. The Colby Community Library and Colby Senior Care had some pretty neat events for the public, surely I was in attendance for those. Nada.

I was in Stevens Point and Lake Holcombe throughout the weekend. Friday and Saturday, I was standing up in my brother and now, sister-in-law’s wedding. We participated in the rehearsal dinner on Friday night which resulted in us watching the Packer game at a brewery after the game. Later, I went over to my brother’s room and we hung out for a bit before deciding to head downtown for our guilty pleasure, Polito’s Pizza.

It’s alarming to see what that place looks like in late evening. I’ve only experienced it in early morning up until this weekend. It looks like a completely different restaurant. Anyway, I digress.

Saturday came and it seemed like a long morning as we awaited the ceremony. I felt like I was more nervous being the best man than I was as the groom nearly a year ago. The ceremony was officiated by our uncle, who has been a preacher for years and years. He did a wonderful job and we were off to the reception part of the afternoon. The meal was wonderful. If you haven’t been out to SentryWorld in Stevens Point for a wedding or just to the restaurant on campus there, I’d highly recommend it. However, during the meal, I couldn’t help but be nervous. I had to give a speech in front of all those people. The time came and my other brother, who was my fellow co-best man, gave his speech. I honestly don’t remember anything he said because I was so nervous. My turn came and I think it went about as well as it could have. I didn’t pass out. Didn’t turn my five-minute speech into a two-minute speech by talking too fast. And I didn’t embarrass the bride and groom (too much). After dinner, I received many compliments from people in attendance so I think it went pretty well. The night flew by as we danced and sang and eventually went to bed. The next morning, I was tasked with getting my tired and aching body into the car so we could go north for a celebration of life for Kaitlyn’s grandfather. The celebration went well and was very well attended. We arrived a little late, not knowing the drive from Stevens Point to Lake Holcombe would be nearly two hours, but we were able to visit with family and friends and remember him.

He was a popular man and was supported by the Lake Holcombe VFW with a 21-gun salute. I was exhausted by the end of the weekend but it was beautiful to see the contrast between two of the most prominent milestones in our lives: a wedding and a funeral.
