Abbotsford upsets Phillips Abbotsford High School’s Ramblers accomplished a major upset Thursday night when they edged Phillips 34-33, in a game that got off to a slow start. Until Thursday night’s game, Abbotsford shared the bottom spot in the northern division, while Phillips, with a 4-1 record, remained the only serious challenger to Medford’s unbeaten Red Raiders.

Abbotsford’s 1-3 zone defense aimed at stopping Phillips’ sixfoot, five-inch center, Dan Cress, stymied the Loggers throughout the first quarter. In spite of a number of good opportunities to shoot, the other four Logger starters refused to do so, trying, instead, to work the ball in to Cress. As a result, Abbotsford led at the quarter, 7-3. In the second quarter, both teams picked up more points, and the half ended with Abbotsford ahead 21-15. Abbotsford made eight of 17 shots in the first two periods.

Play in the third quarter resembled closely the action of the first period, with Abbotsford out in front by eight as the fourth quarter started. Phillips began finding the range and gradually whittled away the Abby lead. With three minutes to go, it was 32-31 in Abbotsford’s favor. Then Amacher and Alexader coined free throws to make it 3431. Cress broke loose for a bucket with 40 seconds left but that ended the game. DuWayne Kalepp and Louis Janda sparked the Rambler offense with 11 and eight points, respectively.
