Two WIAA tournaments assigned to Abbotsford In a letter received by Principal Herbert Juneau, of the Abbotsford school, from Clifford B. Fagan, of the Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association, the following announcement was made: The 1953 basketball tournament plan will again include competition on three levels, namely, district, regional and

sectional. There will be two district tournaments, eight centers having an eight team tournament and 18 centers participating in sub-district or split meets.

The 26 district winners will compete in 13 playoff games, playoff winners being assigned to a sectional. The location of the district playoff games will be made after the district winners are determined.

There will be six eight-team regional meets and 13 sub-regional or split tournaments. Regional tournaments are scheduled for March 2-7.

A sub-district and final tournament have been assigned to the Abbotsford school, and will be played in the new gymnasium.

Guards to give dance at armory New Year’s Eve The National Guards are sponsoring a New Year’s Eve dance, Wednesday evening at the Abbotsford armory. Music will be by Emil and his band and dancing will be from 9 until the merrymakers call it time to quit.

Melvin firm holds 40th anniversary Mr. and Mrs. Francis Melvin, along with their 34 employees and their guests, celebrated Friday night the 40th anniversary of the Melvin sand and gravel business.

Mr.Melvin,withonlyoneusedtruck started the business in June of 1932. In 1946, the gravel washing business was added. In 1951, ready mix concrete was provided and in 1960, the firm started making concrete and lightweight blocks.

Today, the firm has a fleet of 34 trucks with ready mix concrete plants in Abbotsford, Medford, Owen, Thorp and Greenwood. During the summer, more than 45 employees work for the firm.

Mr. Melvin married the former Ruth Ockerlander, Dorchester, on May 27, 1936. They have three children, Neal, Dorchester; Jim, Medford, and Mrs. John (Bonnie) Beecher, Huntington, W. Va.

Neal serves as general manager and Jim office manager of the firm. Mrs. Melvin has also handled office work since their marriage.

Held at the House of Dav-Ed, the event Friday night also served as the firm’s Christmas party.

Jaycees to pick up trees on Jan. 7 The Abbotsford Jaycees will pick up Christmas trees in the city of Abbotsford on Sunday, Jan. 7. All persons are asked to place their Christmas trees at the end of their driveways.
