Letter to the
E ditor Finding the middle ground:
In your November 16 editorial on finding the middle ground you wrote.
“The coming legislative term will also see the state needing to deal with revisions to the 1989 abortion law. The antiquated law, as written, places unnecessary barriers for women needing lifesaving medical treatments for such things as miscarriages and ectopic pregnancies while also having no exceptions for rape or incest. In a post Roe v. Wade world, Wisconsin law needs to be rewritten to address the greater understanding of science and changes in societal standards that have occurred in the past 173 years.”
If you wish to express your opinion do so, but do not interject falsehoods disguised as facts in your editorial. In the beginning of your editorial you stated, “The focus should be on building consensus rather than fanning the flames of discord.” Well by spreading blatantly false facts, you pour gasoline on the fire.
Wisconsin state statute 940.15 sub 2 and 3 state: “ (2) Whoever intentionally performs an abortion after the fetus or unborn child reaches viability, as determined by reasonable medical judgement of the woman’s attending physician is guilty of a Class I felony.”
“ (3) Subsection (2) does not apply if the abortion is necessary to preserve the life or health of the woman, as determined by reasonable medical judgement of the woman’s attending physician.”
That does not sound like a unnecessary barrier for a woman with a miscarriage or ectopic pregnancy. A person would think either condition would warrant a visit to a physician, in fact any pregnancy would warrant the care of a physician. I believe it is called prenatal care. The statute specifically states “necessary to preserve the life or health” would you please print the truth!
In stating that “Wisconsin laws needs to be rewritten to address greater understanding of science and changes in societal standards.” That one is scary, changes in societal standards allowed 6 million Jews to be slaughtered in Germany during World War II. Today in some middle eastern countries it is a societal standard, that a middle aged man can purchase a child bride. In some African communities it is still the societal standard, to practice female genital mutilation. By your logic of societal standards, are all of the aforementioned OK? In conclusion if you wish to stay relevant don’t spread lies and false statements. If you wish to become obsolete and untrusted, just continue to spew misinformation.
