Timing is everything
Cheese Days weekend brought many laughs, good times and fun activities for the City of Colby and those who traveled to the city that weekend. I was not one of those people this year.
I was supposed to be there all weekend to take pictures, do book and scoreboard for some of the softball games and just enjoy it but right before the weekend kicked off I started to not feel well. I took a Covid test on Saturday morning and sure enough, it was positive.
This came as a huge surprise to me as I had worked at Kwik Trip throughout the start of the pandemic and came into contact with plenty of people during that time but never got sick. I also played softball every week during the summer and went about life without an issue. I kind of thought to myself, “If I haven’t got it by now, odds are I’ve already got it and been asymptomatic or I won’t get it.” Boy was I wrong. I didn’t feel too horrible to start but by Saturday afternoon, it had hit me like a Mack truck. I felt aches and pains in parts of my body I didn’t know I had. I spent a lot of the weekend sleeping the sickness away and watching various sporting events on TV. I had never watched a round of golf from beginning to end until that weekend. Similarly, I didn’t know the Pro Bowling Association held an all star weekend similar to any other sport.
All the sports in the world couldn’t help me forget that I was missing one heck of a weekend in Colby. To add to my frustration, my brothers and I had made plans to go golfing for my youngest brother’s birthday over the weekend.
There’s not much I could do about getting sick or the symptoms but I found the timing of it to be the most frustrating thing.
Something that I am super grateful for was my coworkers here at the Tribune- Phonograph. Nathaniel stepped up and managed to get pictures of all but a couple of events that weekend and then turned around and drove to Oshkosh and back to get pictures of the WFCA All-Star game. He also put together the paper with some help from our photo editor, Sami Yocius. I’m sure he slept well when it was all said and done!
In the traditional sense, the phrase “timing is everything” is defined by the success of something as related to when it happens. In this case, it means that I missed a busy and fun weekend.
I don’t see Cheese Days going by the wayside any time soon so I’ll be sure to enjoy and appreciate those weekends in the future.
