Alumni honor retiring Colby School head
An entire community paid tribute Saturday to Harry A. Bender, who has retired after 38 years in the teaching profession, 30 of them as head of the Colby high school.
Approximately 350 alumni who have received diplomas since the first class under Bender’s supervision graduated in 1923 were in attendance. They attended a testimonial dinner in his honor at St. Mary’s Catholic school gymnasium in the evening, after an afternoon reception and with the general public, participated in a dance in the high school gymnasium later.
Graduates present were from New York, Sioux Falls, S.D., Kanakee, Ill., Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul, Minneapolis, Detroit, Mich., Webster Grove and St. Louis, Mo., besides many cities in Wisconsin and Illinois and the local communities.
Former teachers who were present included Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Lehlramn, Miss Doloras Flynn and Mr. and Mrs. Roy Sleeter, the former Miss Evelyn Quigg, all of Wausau; Mr. and Mrs. Fred Bushman, Camp Douglas; Mr. and Mrs. Richard Allen, Owen; Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Abrahamson, Medford; Mr and Mrs. M. N. Hutt, and Mr. and Mrs. Vern Hemphill, Abbotsford; and Mrs. Ray Miller, Duluth.
A display which interested the alumni, were the photos of graduating classes, the basketball teams, campfire girls and bands and glee clubs.

80 will form Milwaukee Brewers Company
This August about 80 men from Wisconsin and Upper Michigan will step into the Milwaukee Brewers Stadium and hit a home run for their future.
In a special ceremony at the night game of August 25, they will take the Navy oath of enlistment and form a bootcamp company under the sponsorship of the Milwaukee Brewers.
The company will carry the Brewers’ pennant through basic training at Great Lakes Naval Training Center. In addition to being part of the pageantry and excitement of Honor America Night at the stadium the Brewers Company will follow the excellent tradition of the 1971 Brewers Company which won honors and acclaim last year.
Although the ranks of all new 1972 Brewers Company have been filling fast, there are sill a few openings available. Young men who otherwise qualify for Navy enlistment are eligible.
Second Swimming program to begin at CHS
The second of four two-week swimming lessons at Colby High School will begin Tuesday, June 20, according to Paul Johnson, pool director.
Lessons will be held at 8:30, 9:30 and 10:30a.m.TuesdaythroughFriday.During the remaining two sessions, July 5 to 14 and July 18 to 28, only two lessons will be provided, at 8:30 and 9:30 a.m. Recreational swim according to Johnson, is available from 6:30 to 9:00 p.m.
