The world is ours to perceive
“If a tree falls in the forest, and no one is there to hear it, does it actually make a sound?”
Some of you might just had some vivid flashbacks of when you first heard that question being asked to you. It might have been with friends or even at school; from a teacher or mentor trying to intrigue your mind in the wondering of science, philosophy, psychology and the tangle world around you and how it works. I know my memories come rushing back into the forefront of my mind.
I would always like to take the question in many different ways and partly that could be because my mind is constantly running with the bajillion different ideas, possibilities and directions of where the topic could go.
In the world of physicists, technically there is an answer to this question. We must defi ne the word and understand the meaning of ‘sound’ before an answer can occur. Are we talking about the vibrations, or what we as humans are capable of hearing (perception) the tree fall? Vibrations are all around us, like gravity. You cannot see it but it is there. Vibrations are energy, and energy can never be destroyed; however, it can be moved.
Second thought, philosophy. If you ask someone who has a wandering mind, intrigued in the unknown, they might have more a philosophical take on it. They might come back and ask, “what forest?” If the forest is only in someone’s imagination then no one could possibly be there to hear the tree fall. It’s imaginative. There are many other directions just within philosophy itself, i.e. naive/direct realism, indirect realism, various types of idealism but that could be a whole other column in itself. Maybe, just maybe, but not for now. Moving on.
In perceptual psychology it depends on if you believe that if no one was there to witness it and perceive the actual occurrence of the tree falling, then in fact it did not happen in the seeker’s world.
You see my point as to I could go on and on about this topic but I will let your mind now do the wandering. In what direction would your mind take you? Maybe, I sparked a sense of intrigue in you. Could you apply this sense of wondering into your own life, all from different directions? What does your internal being say? When you truly sit in the present, feeling the vibrations that are all around you, energy shifts and moves. Are you shifting the energy and vibrations to something you want or are you holding tight to the thought of one way?
The world we perceive is our own to make what we want out of it.
“The universe does not know whether the vibration that you’re offering is because of something you’re observing or something you’re remembering or something that you are imagining. It just receives the vibration and answers it with things that match it.” - Abraham Hicks
