Cabin-fever is real
Out for a walk
Ross is gone now and it’s never been this quiet. Usually I have someone to bounce my column idea off of, this week it’s coming straight off my brain.
Usually, I am never excited about summer. We have to deal with bugs, heat waves, crazy drivers and melting ice cream.
This year, I’m craving a swing at the golf ball. May not sound enthusiastic for some of you, but for myself swinging a golf club is something that is important. Not only does golf keep you active, but it also builds friendships. I have made some great friends and relationships through golf.
Looking at the Colby Hornets golf team as a preview, makes me really miss playing competitively. It puts me in a zone that nothing else can. I’ve played other sports, but it’s just not the same as golf.
Golf, for most instances, is the only shot you can take unless you take a penalty shot or a mulligan shot. In sports, such as football, if you run the ball, you can run the same play over and over again. You don’t get that opportunity in golf.
I’ve played in about 50 tournaments in the course of playing golf, some tournaments are from high school and college. In high school I went to sectionals my senior year, I didn’t play very well. It turned out to be a 90 degree day with little to no cloud coverage.
In college, my second year, I took first at state with 75, 73 in a two day contention. It rained all weekend, setting the course up for an aggressive play. The greens rolled fast so the rain slowed them down.
I drained pars from outside of six feet like nothing. I drove the ball even better only missing a couple of fairways. The only trouble I had on both days was this bunker on the 11th hole, a par five.
I was expecting an easy birdy, but nope. I hit into the bunker and spent three shots to get out. I ended up double bogeying that hole the first day. The second day was better though, as I hit into the bunker again. This time I knew what I was in for. I hit it next to the pin and two putt for a par.
My experience in college golf was well worth it. I played first seed and shot in top five every tournament.
In high school, I played with some of the best players in the state. I played in tournaments from 9 hole contentions to 36 hole contentions.
I’ve competed all over the state. Playing in the junior amateur state championship at Brown Deer Park in Milwaukee, posting up a 95, 86. This was my senior year in high school when I decided to play in this tournament. It was one of the nicest courses I’ve ever played on.
The closer we get to summer, the more impatient I become to get the sticks out on the course.
I wish the Colby golf team the best on their way to regionals.
