Reflecting on my week as an intern

Reflecting on my week as an intern Reflecting on my week as an intern

I’ve got to say my first week as intern was very rewarding. I utilized skills of my own that I’ve learned, I picked up some different ones, and now I’m ready to continue writing and snapping pictures.

I’ve used my skills in the past, but I haven’t had the opportunity in the work field to use what I had. Usually it’s just about how fast you are. Here speed is a factor, but it’s more like an obligation. We’ve got a deadline and that deadline is set for a reason. If we don’t get the paper out in time, we hold the mail up.

Over my week here, I’ve learned more than I can retain, it’s kind of like college. You go in without a doubt in your mind you’re ready and you can handle it. But once you learn what it all entails you’re just flabbergasted. That’s how I feel. I feel as if I’m looking at my future homework assignments and saying that’s a lot. Instead of saying one step at a time, I’d rather panic, maybe start reading into them and start doing them right away. I found out, I have to improve and continue working hard in order to be successful here. It’s not only the working hard aspect that comes into play, but also the skill aspect. I am not the most skillful, but if I set my mind to something I can be successful in that field.

Ross has sat me down a couple times over the past week and gone over some of my articles. Most of it is critiques, which is alright because everyone has to start somewhere. Fortunately I get to start with Ross. He keeps me working and helps when he can. Not only is he a great writer but a great teacher. I find he’s hard on me at times, but I tell myself he is just trying to take care of me and wants to see the best possible work come from my mind.

So far all the articles I’ve worked on is the Central Fire Board meeting, a chili feed, monthly Colby School board meeting, an interview with Mark and Darla Viegut and a free throw contest at St. Mary’s. My favorite article thus far has to be taking pictures of the free throw contest. It was a lot of fun taking those pictures and great to see the community pulling young kids together.

Looking to the future I hope and pray for the chance to continue taking stories and continue going to board meetings. Ross wants to have me covering some sporting events. I am excited for spring sports, it will be a great opportunity to show off my abilities with a camera. I also get the chance to continue writing more stories. I am mostly news based so this opportunity will give me a chance to broaden my field and writing style.

After my first week I would like to thank everyone for welcoming me on board and being so kind.
