LETTER TO THE EDITOR

Thankful to be American

To the editor: We just celebrated another Thanksgiving. Many reflect on the meaning of this day. Everyone’s thoughts are different. To some, this is a day for no work and turkey dinners. To many, it is a day to be thankful.

Family and friends are at the top of many people’s lists. There are other, lesser thoughts of things for which we can be thankful, some of which are:

_ Our country’s founders, without whose wisdom and foresight for limited government we would not enjoy our greatest treasure, freedom.

_ Our ability to practice our religion of choice. Citizens of many nations cannot do this.

_ President Lincoln who abolished slavery in this country. There are countries that engage in slavery to this day.

_ The brave men and women of World Wars 1 and 2 and the civilians of that time. Without their sacrifices and hardships, many countries today may not exist.

_ Our military members, past and

present, preserving freedoms for us and many around the world.

_ All the modern conveniences we have. When used responsibly, they make life easier and more enjoyable for everyone.

_ That we can still speak freely (despite media and social media censorship.) In many countries, you cannot safely speak your mind.

There is so much we can be thankful for that people in other countries don’t enjoy. Freedom and limited government have given our nation much prosperity and made us what we are today. However, there are those who would like to take away our freedoms. We must continuously work to retain our freedom. As President Reagan said, “Freedom is never more than one generation away from extinction. We didn’t pass it to our children in the bloodstream. It must be fought for, protected, and handed on for them to do the same.” Be thankful we have it.
