New fire fighting truck arrives here Sunday

Jack Kelsey, Norman Olsen, Howard Speck and Otiks Radke went to West Bend Sunday to inspect the new fire truck purchased recently by the Village of Abbotsford, and to bring the fire fighting equipment here.

The truck carries a 650-gallon water tank, and it will be used for village and rural runs. The equipment is mounted on a 2-ton Chevrolet chassis and was installed by the Wisconsin Fire Apparatus Corporation. Total cost of the truck and equipment is about $6,900.

The Fire Department has raised about $750 through their efforts in promoting the carnival in the spring and several dances.

This money will be turned over to the village to help pay for the new equipment, and donations are being asked of business men in town of the same purpose.

The new truck will be on display the next market day, Saturday, Sept. 1, on Main Street, and the public is invited to inspect it.

Legion Team to play in Rhinelander tournament The Junior American Legion baseball team will participate in a tournament at Rhinelander, being sponsored by the American Baseball Congress, Friday and Saturday.

Abby ballpark construction set

Abbotsford is on the verge of beginning construction on a pair of longawaited softball fields on the city’s west side next to Abby High School.

The City Council read and approved a series of bids last week which covered earth moving, construction of a restroom facility, electrical poles and wiring and fencing.

Technically, the bids could not be awarded until the city received notification from Washington, D.C.

that its application for LAWCON fund for the ball park project had been officially approved.

The group did provisionally award these contracts, however, pending receipt of the letter.

Low bidder for the grading and restroom work was R and G Excavation, with a figure of $48,000. The council also opted to install metal poles instead of wood, and the low bid on the metal poles was Merkel Electric at $25,980. Safety Link Fence of LaCrosse turned in a low estimate of $10,300 for the fence installation.

The original plan was to create a two percent grade on the fields for adequate runoff but that would have involved movement of a large amount of earth at a costly sum. The one and a half percent slope approved by consulting engineer John Inverson will involve less earth moving and save the city some money, and should still provide adequate drainage, Iverson said.

The city will also install a sewer extension to the restroom for about $10,525. That work is not considered fundable under the LAWCON program.
