LETTER TO THE
E DITOR Resolution, NYT article just creating division
To the editor: The Wausau Daily Herald recently published an article titled “Did NYT article make Wausau’s divide on racial issues wider?”
Many of your readers may have seen it. It portrayed the dispute between proponents and opponents of the “A Community for All” resolution as a battle between those who welcome diverse identity groups to Marathon County, and those who do not.
This is incorrect! The core dispute is between those who welcome ALL U.S. citizens to come here to enjoy the equal opportunities guaranteed by the U.S. Constitution, and those who would give preferential treatment to non-white and LBGTQ people. It is remarkable that every newspaper article I have read has made this same error.
No opponent of the resolution stated that non-white or LBGTQ people are unwelcome here. Opponents objected to the language in the resolution that supports government-sponsored racism against white, heterosexual people. Opponents also objected to language that portrays the people of Marathon County as hatefi lled bigots who have a shameful history of mistreating people of color and LBGTQ people.
The writers of the proposed resolutions have steadfastly refused to substitute the word “equality” (equal opportunity) for the word “equity” (equal outcomes). They refuse to remove negative language that blames the people of Marathon County for a history of widespread racism that is clearly inaccurate. I suspect they fear that a welcoming resolution without the Marxist language and without the hateful, negative language would be quickly adopted, and this opportunity to create division in Marathon County would disappear.
